Poplar Street, Petersburg I would start out this article with something like what time is it and someone would proba- bly say it's Howdy Doody time but it's only time to say hey. We'll just wait and see what comes to mind for me to write down. It seems as though it has rained a lot this past week and that has slowed progress down on decorating the park for the Ministerial As- sociation's Christmas in the park project. It rained us out a couple of days, but we have gotten some of the bigger decorations set up along with several by the main gate. The park caretaker is still mowing leaves so we have tried to keep things out of his way as much as possible. Our efforts are always enjoyed by those who drive through the park once they are energized. My doctor's appointment went fair, but my test results show a need of getting back on my treadmill and this is just like any other exer- cising you got to start and then do it faithfully. I have said it before, it isn't getting older that bothers you so much, but it is all the things you used to do now become harder to do. I'm starting to think it is useless to put things away so you will have them when you need them is false thinking. I have many screws, nails and fasteners of all kinds but when you need something what you have isn't what you need. I waste a lot of time looking for things which I thought I had. If I could only convince myself to look the job over and go buy what I need when it is time to work on something. I know a person who cataloged and sorted all his hardware he salvaged from his job. This is real dedication to detail, but not many peo- ple would ever stick to this project. The closest "This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (I John 5:4). There are many who look upon faith as an abstract sort of thing. Some suppose faith is merely looking on the bright side of things; to others it is will-power; still others confuse it with a person's view-point. In the Bible, faith is simply believing God. "Faith" is the noun and "believe" the verb. This is seen in Rom. 4:5, where the Apostle Paul declares: "To him that worketh not but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." The above passage from I John 5 also makes this plain, when seen in its context: "This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. "Who is he that overcometh the world but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God" ( Vers. 4,5). It is, then, the believer in Christ, and on- ly the believer in Christ, who can overcome the world. Unbelievers are swept away by the attractions and the pretentions of this world- The recent election and political situation is a reminder of how desperately our nation needs a spiritual awakening. In recent years we have seen America drift far from our great spiritual heritage. In God we trust is still on our coins but too many trust in political power, greed and dishonesty. Someday God will judge America for her sins. Many devout Christians are deeply troubled by the past few weeks. Socialism is taking over the media, political leaders, education, and internet. The elite and liberal media often express their anti-God phi- losophy. What ever is right they call it wrong. The editor of U.S. News and World Report ex- pressed it well in an editorial, "Where have our values gone? " According to the editorial three out of every four Americans think we are in moral and spir- itual decline. Two out of three think America is off track. The article said television and the music industry despis- es religion, marriage and respect for author- ity. The forces of evil dominate many areas of America life. Many religious people have denied the absolute truth of God's Word and called it pluralism. Other god's have been accepted and we call this multiculturalism. We have lost our spiritual sanity and changed our The church page is made possible by the following firms and businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. His Eye is on the Sparrow By Civilla D. Martin "Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? Fear not therefore; ye are of more value than many sparrows" (Luke 12:6 -7). Why should I feel discour- aged, Why should the shad- ows come, Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home, When Je- sus is my portion? My con- stant friend is He; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watch- es me. "Let not your heart be troubled," His tender word I hear, and resting on His good- ness, I lose my doubt and fear; Though by the path He lea- deth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me, His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. Whenever I am tempted, Whenever clouds arise, When songs give place to sighing, When hope within me dies, I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. I sing because I'm happy. I sing because I'm free. For His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me. Dwight Howe, Pastor Karri Brock, Reporter WINSLOW G.B. CHURCH 600 E.
