The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, June 23, 2021 B-3 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg "And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries…" (Ezra 3:3). At first glance, this verse doesn't seem to make much sense. Back in Ezra's day, a city's walls were its main line of defense. The citizens of Jer- icho felt very secure within the confines of the massive wall that surrounded them. So here, if fear had fallen upon the Jews because of the en- emies that surrounded them, why would they build an altar, and not a wall? Well, as you may know, at one time Jerusa- lem had a wall, but when Nebuchadnezzar con- quered Israel, his armies "brake down the wall of Jerusalem" (II Chron. 36:19). And the people Marriage is one of God's greatest and most endearing gifts to humankind. This divine plan was revealed to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and clearly described in the first book of the Bible. "Therefore, shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be one flesh" (Genesis 2:24, K JV ). Even before God established the church and gov- ernment He planned the one institution that can bring happiness and preserve our society. There are liberal politicians and even pastors who fail to define marriage as between a man and woman. Marriage has always been the bedrock of culture around the world. There have been times when societies have allowed homosexual- ity to flourish as in the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, Greece, and the Roman Empire. None of these civilizations survived. Even where sexual perversion was tolerated, marriage con- tinued to be honored in law and custom. Only in the last few years have countries, like the Netherlands and Belgium, actually legal- ized what is called "gay marriage" and given it le- gal status with traditional male-female unions. Our current President is tak- ing America down a dan- gerous, slippery slope. Most people want to be kind, loving and un- derstanding of all peo- ple. Most families have some relative who is gay and they dearly love this family member. This makes it hard for them to take a firm stand on the teaching of God's word. There is forgiveness for sin and a new life can begin. I have spent a month in the Netherlands and visited Belgium. Church attendance is almost non-existent, and the atmosphere is one of pro- fanity, drugs, and cohabitation. In many side streets the red lights shine from many houses. America must reclaim the family. The church page is made possible by the following firms and businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Minutes with the Bible By Pastor Ricky Kurth Are you keeping warm when you try to work? I have been retired for nine years. I have found very few things wrong with it. One of the things I have noticed since getting older is I am slow- ing down and what used to feel like a cool tem- perature is hot to me now. Acclimation to your normal surroundings is important so as I grow older I find I can still take more heat than many people. You have to be care- ful and not become heat exhausted which makes you feel miserable but is less severe than heat stroke which can be fatal. If you feel heat exhaus- tion is coming on, get somewhere cool and hy- drate if you don't feel sick. If you get into heat stroke trouble get the person into the cool, but re- frain from giving them anything orally. Get them cool as soon as you can and call 911 for help, please call for help. I've been talking to a few local merchants and businesses concerning donations to the Lions. We usually need help with our car show cruise-in but last year we couldn't have our show. We still have our trophies and dash plaques so that much is covered. If we ask you for a donation to help us it will be used to help someone who needs our help whether through state projects or locally if their need falls in place for us to help. We appreciate whatever you can give to help us help others. We are sensitive to the fact you have been hit as hard as we have so your donations are really precious to our organization. Our cruise-in will be at the Village Inn on Ju- ly 9 starting at 5:30 p.m. and we will be present- ing trophies at 7 p.m. We have some pretty tro- phies which have been waiting to be presented.
