Poplar Street, Petersburg Blackard takes first on the green By Matt Haycraft Peyton Blackard, 14, won first place in the 12-15 -year- old boys' division at Quail Creek Country Club Prep Tour in Robinson, Ill., on June 12 and 13, against about 13 participants. On the par 72 course, Blackard scored one under par on day one and four un- der par on day two, putting him in first place. When asked what the hard- est hole for him was, Black- ard said, "number 14, a 460 yard par 4. It is a tight-driving hole. If you barely miss it on either side of the fairway, you are blocked out by trees." Re- garding the tournament and how he felt about it, he stat- ed, "(It was) good to get me warmed up for the upcoming A JGA (American Junior Golf Association)," which added he was looking forward to, and said, "It is one of the better fields I will play this summer." He previously played in the Men's League Tournament at Rolling Hills Country Club in Newburgh. Shooting a 73/71 on a par 72 course, putting him in second place against an all adult group. Blackard said, "I was the youngest by a lot." He will be playing at Quail Creek Country Club again in the boys' and girls' 12-15 divi- sion in the A JGA's Junior All- Star Series on July 13-16. Blackard is the son of Jason and Melanie ( Wirey) Black- ard, of Fort Branch. The event was sponsored by the Pike County 4-H Council, Prides Creek Park and Pike County Soil and Water Conservation. The event was a big hit, de- spite the unfavorable weather that day. A total of 52 partici- pants showed up ready to fish and take home the trophy. Running this event was Becky Steinhart, a 47-year volunteer with 4-H, and Andy Bueltmann, a District 6 Fish Biologist, weighing in the fish caught before they were re- leased back into the lake.
