Photo by Matt Haycraft School board sets book rental rates, makes personnel changes By Andy Heuring Book rental rates for Pike County Elementary Schools were set for the 2021-22 school year during the June 8 Pike County School Board meet- ing. The board also dealt with several personnel changes, in- cluding officially hiring a new football coach and school re- source officer. "How many of these are still books versus Chromebooks? " asked school board member Chris McKinney. Assistant Superintendent Dana Deffendoll said while they use the Chromebooks, they also still have several tra- ditional books. "My point is we are getting fewer and fewer (books)," said McKinney. "I don't think it is as fast as fewer and fewer. Especially for the little kiddos, they ar- en't going to be able to use some online services," said Deffendall. "I just remember when we did this (started switch to Chromebooks), we asked if this is going to take textbook fees down. I'm waiting for that to happen," said McKinney. Superintendent Dr. Su- zanne Blake said, in the board members' packets, "there is a breakdown on which are text- books and which are consum- ables." She added, "Some grade levels choose weekly studies so kids would have that for take home." "There are still a lot (teach- ers) that aren't quite ready to completely do away with books," said Blake. Numerous personnel hires, retirements and resignations were approved. Kelly Brashear was offi- cially hired as football coach. Brashear, who already was teaching at Pike Central, re- places Dave Stephens, who re- signed after last season. He had recommended and as- sumed duties of the football coach several weeks ago, but it was made official last Tuesday. Indiana State Trooper Paul Bastin was hired as the school resource officer. Bastin is in his 31st year as a state troop- er and will retire this summer. "I had retirement coming up and was thinking about a re- tirement job and saw this po- sition open up," said Bastin. "I have always enjoyed working with kids. I did career camp for 13 years. . . I'm really look- ing forward to it." Deloris Henson, director of Nutrition announced her retirement effective June 25, 2021. She has worked for the school corporation for 28 years. "I enjoyed my years as an employee with the Pike County School Corp. It has been the perfect job for a mother with children." Missy Willis was hired to replace Henson. Other resignations includ- ed Winslow kindergarten teacher Jenna Stoll and Pe- tersburg virtual teacher for K-2 Jodi Pickett. Also Title 1 pre-school assistant Mary Haycraft resigned to stay at home with a newborn. Aman- da Young resigned as an aide, and Falicia Hayes and Debra Killion both resigned as cus- todians. Cain Parker resigned as cross country coach due to a new job that would prevent him from attending meets. Emily Cherry and Caleb Cherry were hired for 30 hours of summer instruction. Jason McKinney was ap- pointed head swim coach. He previously served as head coach until resigning due to re- quirements of his job as deputy sheriff. He served as an assis- tant and is now replacing Tra- vis Cochren, who resigned as swim coach to take a position with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department. Pike County Schools re- newed their casualty and lia- bility insurance with EMC and changed their cyber liability coverage to AtBay. Brent Pfis- ter, with GAB Insurance, said Pike County School's current carrier declined to give the corporation a quote. He added most cyber security companies are requiring multiple authenti- cation before they will even of- fer coverage. Pfister said many quotes are coming back 10 to 20 percent higher this year, due to big losses. However, he said Pike Schools are looking at a 6.5 percent increase at a price of $162,793. They changed their cyber liability to AtBay Insur- ance. Dr. Blake said with At- Bay, they would get triple the coverage for $43 more. The to- tal price of cyber coverage was $ 6,532.33. In other business, the board voted to purchase a new foot- ball scoreboard from Nevco at a price of $17,798.77. The oth- er bid was from Daktronics for $15,990, plus freight. Athletic Director Dustin Powell told the board the Nev- co controller is interchangeable with the new basketball score- board system, which would pro- vide a backup for them if they needed it. He said the Daktron- ics system would require the purchase of a backup system separate from the purchase. This price did not include installation. The two quotes for installation were $22,450 for CAH Custom Installs and $11,907 from Custom Sign and Engineering. In a letter to the school board, Dr. Blake recommend- ed going with the more expen- sive quote. She said the quote provided by Custom Sign did not meet the required column and foundation specifications. Powell said the Indiana specs require the beam structure holding the scoreboard to with- stand 120 mph winds. He said if the installation specs weren't met, they would have insurance problems. McKinney asked how many companies they had reached out to for quotes on the instal- lations. Powell said they reached out to the two companies who gave them quotes. "To me, what is alarming is we have a quote for $11,000 and another for $22,000," said McK- inney. He moved to accept to pur- chase the scoreboard from Nevco and table the installa- tion prices until they could get more quotes. The next school board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13.
