Poplar Street, Petersburg See DIAMOND on 4 See BOYS on 2 Mt. Vernon takes 10-1 win over Chargers By Mike Sandifar Coach Jacob Western's Pike Central Charger Base- ball Team fell to Pocket Ath- letic Conference (PAC) op- ponent Mt. Vernon 10 -1 at Pike Central Tuesday after- noon to fall to 3-14 overall on the 2021 diamond cam- paign, including an 0 -11 mark in the conference. Nei- ther team could put a run across the plate in the first two innings of the contest, but in the top of the third frame, the visitors scored three runs to take a 3-0 ad- vantage after two and one- half innings. The Chargers did not score in their half of the third inning to keep the score at 3-0, in favor of Mt. Vernon; however, in the top of the fourth inning, the Wildcats pushed a run home to take a 4-0 lead af- ter three and one-half in- nings. Again, the hosts did not score in their half of the inning, and after four full innings of baseball, the vis- itors led the hosts 4-0. The eventual winners put an- other run across the plate in the top of the fifth inning to push the Wildcat lead to 5 -0 after four and one-half innings of play. The Chargers scored their only run of the en- counter in their half of the fifth inning, when sopho- more Jagar Dent hit an 0 -2 pitch for a single, giving the hosts a runner on first with no outs. That brought soph- omore Brody Rice to the plate for Pike Central, and Rice hammered the first pitch offered him to deep centerfield for a double. Dent was off at the crack of the bat on Rice's double, and Dent scored to get the Chargers on the scoreboard to trail 5 -1. That brought Isaac Burdette to the bat- ter's box for the Chargers. As the Mt. Vernon pitcher eyed Burdette, he still had an eye on Rice on second, and he picked Rice off sec- ond for the first out of the inning—but leaving no bas- erunners for Pike Central. Burdette hit a long fly ball to center for the second out of the inning for the Char- gers, and that brought ju- nior Nolan Rice to the plate.
