Dubois County Museum STEM project this Thursday The Dubois County Mu- seum continues their Third Thursday free nights on May 20, with a look at a STEM project. STEM stands for Sci- ence, Technology, Engineer- ing and Math and with this project the museum invites all ages to construct a model kit of an Inclined Plane. The museum will be open from 5:30 to 8 p.m. this evening for this special night. An inclined plane or ramp is used numerous places throughout the museum, es- pecially in the farming exhib- it. An incline plane is one of the six classical simple ma- chines defined by Renais- sance scientists. Inclined planes enabled workers to transfer their load from one level to another more eas- ily. From the most sim- ple to the most complicat- ed, all machines help peo- ple move things more easi- ly. This movement is called work. Visitors are welcome to take part in locating some of the many forms of simple machines used in the farm- ing or pioneering by partici- pating in a Scavenger Hunt. Photos of the machines used will be displayed on a paper and participants are invited to locate the item in the muse- um. A Scavenger Hunt form is available at the lobby desk. The exhibit entitled "Oh Baby, Growing Up in Dubois County" will be displayed until October 1. This display takes the visitor back for a look at vintage children's clothes, infant products and instructions on the care of a child. The museum is open reg- ular hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. on Sundays. Closed on Mondays. Pike County well represented on USI Dean's List In recognition of outstand- ing academic achievement, the University of Southern Indiana Dean's List has been released for the Spring 2021 Semester. Dr. Mohammed Khayum, USI Provost, an- nounced that a total of 1,966 undergraduates were named to the Dean's List. Semester honors are not awarded to master's degree students or doctoral stu- dents. Undergraduate students must achieve a 3.5 or better grade point average to be named to the list. Students earning in 12 or more se- mester hours, with a semes- ter grade point average be- tween 3.5 and 4.0, are named to the list. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on as- signments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. High school diplomas repre- sent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives. Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work. FR AMING One of the classic ways to display a di- ploma is in a frame. Many businesses of- fer customized framing where the frame material and the matting can be chosen. Some grads may want to include a pho- tograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors. CREATE A SHADOW BOX Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photo- graphs or papers. Items such as a gradu- ation tassel, medal or other award, a var- sity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremo- ny can be placed in the shadow box. CREATE A PHOTO WALL Display the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every time the wall is viewed. Some fami- lies may want to display their diplomas to- gether, especially if multiple family mem- bers attended the same school. MAKE A WORK OF ART Various online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another. PLACE IT UNDER GLASS Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. When entertain- ing guests, the diploma can make for a unique conversation piece. A school diploma is worthy of recogni- tion. There are various creative ways to display these documents that reflect the hard work and success of their recipients.
