You're Chase causes sports to go on lock down By Andy Heuring A man who crashed his truck after being chased by police and the fled into the woods near Pike Central Middle and High Schools at about 4:30 p.m. last Wednes- day caused sports teams at the school to be locked down in their locker rooms until po- lice captured him. Bruce M. Phillips, 35, of 1677 E. Fairgrounds Rd., Huntingburg, was arrested on charges operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a previ- ous conviction, resisting law enforcement and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle. Indiana State Trooper Dustin Stein said he was driv- ing south on Highway 61 in Campbelltown when a green pickup truck swerved across the center line and nearly hit him. Stein turned around to pur- sue the truck and saw the truck slow down and turn in- to a driveway, but Stein said it went around a tree and went back onto Highway 61 and drove north at about 50 mph. It then turned onto CR 50 N., and then went into the drive way of Pleasant Ridge Church. It drove into the cemetery before attempting to drive around the church. "The ve- hicle fell down an embank- ment," stated Stein in an af- fidavit of probable cause. He said Phillips then jumped out of the truck and ran towards the woods. Stein said he ran towards Phillips and repeated- ly ordered him to stop. Trooper Stein said Phillips kept running and he lost sight of him. He then checked on the passenger, who said she was okay. State Troopers, Pike County Deputies and Peters- burg City Officers all joined a search and set up a perim- eter on the areas. A nearby resident said they saw Phil- lips running east. Stein said several officers began searching the woods and found Bruce, who began to run east towards an open field, but pursued him and or- dered him at gunpoint to get on the ground and after multi- ple commands, he finally com- plied and was taken into cus- tody. He failed field sobriety tests and refused a chemical test, saying he would test positive for marijuana, according to the affidavit.
