I took another trip to the woods the oth- er day. I hadn't been for nearly a month. My deer season ended at the end of December and since then I have been trying to catch up on work. My weapon this time was not a gun or bow, but a chainsaw. The winter seemed to start a little early in my neck of the woods and I'm running out of fi rewood quickly. The temperatures were in the mid 30's. It was a perfect day to pull and tug on a few logs and do a little after-the-sea- son-scouting as well. This time of year you can kick around without the fear of spooking the deer or ruining a hunt. One can also see where they are bedding when there is no pres- sure from outside infl uences. I even found a shed. What I noticed, however, was how I was just as fulfi lled with a chainsaw in my hand as I was with a weapon. The smell of the outdoors was just as exhilarating when hunting season is closed, and felling a tree was just as exciting as sitting in one. What all of this tells me is that part of my love of hunt- ing and fi shing is actually a love for the outdoors. And that's interesting to me. Let me tell you why. Most Christians believe God draws a person to himself through his spirit, called the Holy Spirit. The Spirit takes the things of God and draws us to God himself. And while God partners with us in creating many things, he didn't part- ner with us in creating this wonderful universe we call the world. Whether a planet, a particle, or a plant; God is the sole designer. Each is his handiwork and his alone. Long before the Word of God was printed and the Son of God was revealed, God's creation was there, drawing anyone who would look and listen to its author, designer, and Lord. King David penned it this way. 1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. (Psalm 19:1-4 NIV) Creation was the fi rst instrument the Spirit used to draw men to God. And its song is still ringing throughout time. If you decide to seek love via a dating app, be careful and watch for the scammers who only love your money. The CARES Act funding is helping Americans with the COVID-19 pandemic by providing increased unemployment benefits and other support. But unfortunately, some of this money is ending up in the hands of scammers. These con artists are then using people to funnel money out of the country. This con may look like a classic romance scam, but victims are tricked into illegal activity and can be prosecuted. How the Scam Works: You join a dating app and start messaging with someone who looks amazing. They are the complete package: good-looking, successful, kind … and, most im- portantly, really into you, too! After chatting for a little while, your new love interest suggests that you chat on text or email, rather than through the app. If you do that, you may notice that they also de- lete their dating profile. Everything seems great, but soon your new beau has some unusual – but seemingly harm- less – requests. They want you to receive money for them and wire it overseas. They may claim to be helping a loved one bat- tling COVID-19, doing a business deal, or representing a charitable organization. If you refuse, your amorous new beau may suddenly get hostile, threaten you, or grow distant. It turns out that the money they want you to receive is actually sto- len CARES Act funds. After steal- ing it, scammers send the money through someone in the United States to make it harder for au- thorities to trace. Money laundering and wire fraud are illegal! Although the "money mule" is a victim, too, they may still face prosecution. Protect Yourself From this Scam: • Do your research. Many scammers steal photos from the internet to use in their dating pro- files. You can do a reverse image lookup using a website, like Google Images , to see if the pho- tos on a profile are stolen from some- where else. You can also search online for a profile name, email, or phone number to see what adds up and what does not. Scammers most often pose as men and target women in their 50s and 60s. • Ask specific questions about details given in a profile . A scam- mer may stumble over remember- ing details or making a story fit. • Never send money or sensi- tive personal information to some- one you have never met in person. Cut off contact if someone starts asking you for financial or personally identifiable information (PII), like your credit card num- ber or government ID numbers. • Be very suspicious of re- quests to wire money or use a prepaid debit card. These are scammers' favorite ways to send payments because, like cash, once the money is gone, it cannot be recovered.
