The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that, in the United States in 2019, there were in ex- cess of 1.2 million violent crimes, which included robbery, rape, aggravated assault, manslaughter, and homicide. While it may not be possible to protect one- self against every type of crime, being aware of potential dangers and learning some techniques to fend off a would-be at- tacker can go a long way toward improving per- sonal protection. Self-defense tech- niques can be utilized by anyone. Self-defense in- structors may have fine- tuned certain techniques, but these generalized guidelines can serve as useful starting points. Learn the vulnerable areas Whether you are stron- ger or weaker than your attacker, the element of surprise is your friend. Blows directed to vulner- able areas can bide you time to get away. Vulner- able areas include the eyes, nose, throat, groin, and shins. Use what you have Jennifer Cassetta, the creator of Stilettos & Self Defense, a popular self- defense program taught at colleges, corporations and conferences around the country, advises stab- bing at the attacker's arms or hands with a key or another object if you are ever grabbed. Use pepper spray if you have it. Use strong body language Body language is a nonverbal form of com- munication that projects a strong and confident per- son. If you appear alert and strong — making eye contact with all people — would-be attackers may look for easier targets. Also, keep your compo- sure and try to avoid ap- pearing afraid. Stay close and hit first Whether you are on the offensive or defensive, keeping close to your at- tacker might make it more difficult for that person to hit you hard. Also, striking first can catch the attacker off guard and increase your chances of escaping. Try to push him or her to the ground, because gain- ing balance after falling is not easy. Even if you master every self-defense tech- nique, remember self- defense is not about winning a fight. The main objective is to stay safe, and this may mean run- ning away at the first op- portunity. The immediate goals of self-defense are to wrench free, disorient the attacker and escape. For more information about personal protection, seek the advice of a self- defense instructor or your local law enforcement agency. Top self-defense tips for personal safety Speedy, reliable internet is something people have quickly grown accustomed to. That's no doubt why dropped WiFi signals can be so frus- trating. Various things can con- tribute to slow or interrupted Wi-Fi. As a result, there's no one-size-fits-all solution to address underperforming Wi- Fi. But that's good news, as it means there's an assortment of strategies that consumers can try to improve the Wi-Fi in their homes. • Upgrade your router. Many people rent their rout- ers from their internet service providers, but it may surprise some to learn that they can buy their own. Buying your own router can be beneficial in various ways, not the least of which is it can save money. Router rental fees vary, but they typically cost between $10 and $15 per month. Con- sumers will save money in the long run by buying their own router rather than rent- ing one from their ISP. When buying their own routers, consumers also can pick from a host of options, including rout- ers with strong p e r f o r m a n c e r a t i n g s t h a t may contribute to better WiFi performance. • Set up au- tomatic firm- ware updates. It's easy to forget a router after it's been plugged in and internet service starts work- ing. However, manufactur- ers routinely issue firmware updates to improve router performance. Turning on au- tomatic updates may improve WiFi performance, and such updates also can provide a host of additional benefits, in- cluding added security mea- sures. • Relocate the router. PCMag.com notes that the location of the router can affect WiFi performance. If possible, locate the router in the center of the home so it can easily reach all parts of the house. Locating wireless routers away from walls and other obstructions also may improve performance. • Switch frequencies. Switching frequencies can help wireless consumers whose service might be ad- versely affected by conges- tion. Consumer Reports notes that wireless conges- tion can affect WiFi perfor- mance in apartment buildings and densely populated neigh- borhoods. In such instances, consumers can check their routers to see if they're run- ning on the 2.4 GHz fre- quency band. If so, switching them to the 5 GHz band, which has more channels and is likely to be less con- gested, may improve WiFi performance. Slow and/or interrupted WiFi signals can be very frustrating. Thankfully, vari- ous strategies can help con- sumers quickly remedy such issues. Tips to improve WiFi around the house
