The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 16, 2020 B-3 Raiders edge Lady Chargers in final minutes By James Capozella A four-point third quarter contest was manhandled in- to a 49 -37 Southridge win when 6'2" Myah Montgom- ery zinged the nets for 15 fourth-quarter Lady Raid- er markers. Prior to that on- slaught, Montgomery ac- counted for just six of six from the line and some defensive re- bounds. In the final minute of the third, Mallory Hunt had knotted the two teams up at 25 all with a three-point play, but Lady Raider Abigail Kerkhoff scored her second basket of the game for a two-point edge. Montgomery got to the line for two free throws to nudge her team to 29 -25 going into the fourth. Brailey Mills popped a three and then Mallory Hickey got the assist to Kya Leighty, after the hail of baskets hooped by Montgomery. Mills added two from the charity stripe and Kenzie Powell's assist to Mal- lory Hunt got the club to 34- 44 with 1:55 remaining. Mont- gomery swished a three at the one-minute mark and Mallory Hickey sank her second three of the night for the 49 -37 final. Mills led all Lady Charger scorers with, 13 including three treys. Hunt was good for four second-half baskets and finished with 11 mark- ers. Kya Leighty had three baskets and a free throw for seven points, and Kenzie Pow- ell and Hickey each had one first-half three-bagger. Regarding Montgomery, coach Kyle McCutchan said, "We did a good job on her until the fourth and she got loose for a couple drives and hit some jump shots. She is a good player who we looked to contain, but Southridge did a good job of moving the ball on offense. We did miss sev- eral layups and that was the difference. We tied it up at 25 and we hit a rough spot on of- fense for six or eight minutes ant that was when Southridge took control. They had no an- swer for Mallory Hunt on the block and when she went out with foul trouble, our offense stalled." "Our girls executed the game plan defensively pretty well, but you can't go score- less for an extended period of time and beat a quality op- ponent. Our team competes, and we scrap and claw. I love the effort that we play with, but like we preach, we have to execute and compete for four quarters." In the preliminary contest, the Lady Charger JV fell to the Raiders 29 -16 after heading in- to the halftime down 15 -7. A solitary second-quarter bas- ket by Madelyn Fiscus was followed up with one in the third by Shelby Meadows. To- gether, the two amounted to nearly half the team's scoring. Keena Young was responsible for a first-quarter basket, and Tiffany Arteaga, Ruby Sallee and Jamie Sallee finished the fourth quarter scoring. The Raiders were able to maintain their first-half mar- gin, outscoring the Lady Char- gers 14-9 in the second half.
