Winslow house fire puts itself out Winslow resident James McDow- ell woke up early to go to work last Thursday and found smoke in his house. Daniel Shelton, Fire Capt. with the Patoka Township Fire Depart- ment, said McDowell went down- stairs to check on the wood burn- er after he saw the smoke. He saw flames in the basement, so he gath- ered up his animals and exited the house, and called 911. The call came in at 3:17 a.m. Shelton said when firemen ar- rived at the 102 N. Cherry St. house, they went into the basement, but there were no flames. Howev- er, they found a broken water line above the wood stove. He said when they investigated the immediate ar- ea, they found a wood column that helped support the floor. It had a "moderate" amount of char on it that lead up the column to where the PVC water line was located. Shelton said it appears the fire on the column melted the water line and then the water from that put out the fire. The house is owned by Barry and Candice Parker. McDowell rented it from them. Shelton said the house had no fire alarms, so they installed smoke alarms in the residence as part of a smoke alarm blitz they have being doing the last few weeks.
