A-4 Wednesday, October 21, 2020 The Press-Dispatch County Monday-Friday Saturdays Courthouse Early voting in progress with less than 2 weeks until Election Day By Andy Heuring In Pike County, almost 18 percent of the registered vot- ers have already voted either in person or by mail. A first in election history in Pike County took place last Tues- day night in Spurgeon. A sat- ellite voting center had 93 people vote from 3 to 8 p.m. at the satellite center. "We had 93 people vote in five hours. I thought that was pretty good," said Clerk Lana Griffith about the sat- ellite center's first use. The satellite center was in Union on Tuesday night. It will al- so be in Stendal on Tuesday, October 27, from 3 to 8 p.m., and in Winslow, from 8 a.m. to noon, the next two Satur- days. Any voter registered in Pike County can vote at the satellite center. The Clerk's office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each week day for early voting in person until Monday, No- vember 2, when it will be open for voting from 8 a.m. to noon. The Clerk's office will also be open on the next two Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to noon, for voting. Griffith said, as of Tues- day, there had been 1,002 people vote in the Clerk's office and 622 mailed bal- lots have been received. So, about 1,670 people have al- ready voted. On election day, there will be three vote centers open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will be at the Gospel Center Church on Illinois St. in Pe- tersburg, the Winslow Com- munity Center next to the El- ementary School and at the Otwell Community Center. There are two school board races: In District 5, it will be a re- match of four years ago with incumbent Steve Potter be- ing challenged by Krista Hal- brader. In District 4, incumbent Chris Satterfield is being challenged by Jim Johns. Chris McKinney is unop- posed in District 3. There are four local races in Pike County. Those races are clerk of the circuit court, which has Republican incumbent Lana Griffith being challenged by Democrat Summer Sorgius. The county coroner race pits Democrat Nicholas Henson against Republican Ray- mond Brooks. The county treasurer's race is between Republican Susan Brittain and Democrat Jody Hoover. The county council at- large race is a five-way race for three positions. Voters can vote for three candi- dates. The three candidates who get the most votes are elected. The five candidates are: incumbents Democrat Todd Meadors, and Republi- cans Greg Willis and Dennis Bishop. They are facing two challengers: Republican Na- than Evans and Independent Cathy McFarland. There are several posi- tions at the state level up for election on the local ballot. Pike County has three state representative races on the ballot. In District 63, Incum- bent Shane Lindauer is be- ing challenged by Demo- crat Teresa K. Kendall. Both are from Jasper. In District 64, incumbent Matt Hostet- tler, of Fort Branch, is being challenged by Democrat Ian Gamroth, of Princeton. In District 75, Democrat John Hurley and Republican Cin- dy Ledbetter are vying for the seat Ron Bacon held for several terms. Bacon did not seek re-election. Democrat Woody Myers is challenging Republican in- cumbent Governor Eric Hol- comb. Also in that race is Lib- ertarian Donald Rainwater, of Westfield. Former Evans- ville Mayor John Weinzapfel and former Dist. 2 U.S. Con- gressman Todd Rokita are facing off in a battle for Indi- ana Attorney General. At the federal level, Don- ald J. Trump is being chal- lenged by Joe Biden. Down ballot is the Eighth District Congressional race. Repub- lican Larry Bucshon is being challenged by Democrat E. Thomasina Marsili, of Spen- cer, and Libertarian James Rodenberger, of Terre Haute. Some of us have been blessed to have had several. Some we didn't realize until years later, when we became wiser from life's experiences. The arro- gance of youth no longer blinding us. Realizing they were there working to help us the whole time. Who were they? Teachers that impacted our lives. Mr. and Mrs. Hays, Mr. and Mrs. Lamey, Mr. Brenton, Mr. Lemond, Mr. Kincaid, Mr. Ander- son, Mrs. Cook, Mr. Edrington, Coach Leinenbach and others. They all did their best to teach the subject matter to me, but along the way, to also educate me about being honest, hardworking and respon- sible. Whether it was standing at the piano singing your part (Mr. Hays), or giving your report three days early (Mr. Anderson) they found different ways to motivate us to learn. They knew we were all different and learned differently. My kids were blessed to have some of these teachers and others like them. We lost one a while back, Mr. Mason. He loved to teach. He told me once, "it's not a job." Teaching is a calling, to serve a purpose, make a difference in a child's life. He did. They all did. Our teachers are still doing that today, with another generation, my grand- children. Teachers, making a dif- ference in a child's life. Thank your child's teacher when you get a chance. I am honored to be associated with them. It's Not A Job PORK CHOP DINNER WINSLOW MASONIC LODGE #260 S, O. 24 Carry-out • 11 until Sold Out $ 10 510 N.
