Good Luck at Sectional Chargers Football their own 27 and ran the ball, with Gish, Dent and Frasure resulting in a fourth down punt by Dent that was returned 45 yards by Brady Reidford, who cut across the field and scored, but with a flag at the goal line. North Posey went on top 44-8 and kicked from the 30, with a Gish return of 16 yards. Frasure carried the ball four times for 18 yards, but on third and eight, Dent was caught for a one-yard loss. Dent's fourth down pass from midfield to McDonald fell in- complete and the Vikings took over. Before the third quarter ended, North Posey gained a pair of first downs and then Dalton Hill ran for 23 yards and a 51-8 Viking lead. Frasure ran for 12 yards on a second and nine carry, but a fumble recovered by Dalton Reidford put North Posey in control from the Pike Central 32. Three plays later, Frasure made a stop and prevented a touchdown, but the Vikings were not deterred and on third and 17, went in for their final score of the night. With four minutes remaining, Ju- lian Gish raced 82 yards for a stand-up cheer from the Char- ger crowd. The Chargers looked to be 19 players dressed out for the game, with nearly that same number not in uniform for Friday night at North Posey. The Pike Central Chargers were on the field without the services of Quade Morton, Brayden Howald, Jon Can- non, Garrett Boyd and a host of others. The 30 or so normal- ly on the field was cut to just 19 and some at critical spots on the lineup. A fter the game, Pike Cen- tral Charger head football coach Dave Stephens com- mented on the team's num- bers stating, "The number of kids we had. We're still com- ing back from COVID quar- antine on some of them. We had some injuries and we had some academic ineligibili- ty. So we lost a couple kids there. Our normal strength is about 28. So with COVID and injuries and eligibility, we were down to about 19." Asked about the kick return for a score, coach said, "When we had those two weeks off, we changed up some things on kick return and we have been getting better field posi- tion on our kick returns in the past two weeks than we had. And I thought it was just a matter of time, because there were a couple, he got tackled by the last guy two times. It's a credit to the team, and the ad- justment that coach Cloe and Dent made on the special team is a testament to Julian's abil- ity to read and once he got in- to the open field, he used his God-given ability and put on the after burners and nobody can catch him from behind." Asked about Wyatt Fra- sure's 104-yard game, coach said, "This is the first or sec- ond time he has hit 100 yards rushing and for us, he's our guy. He is the one we want to put our offense through and it was nice to see him get north of the 100 -yard mark with 104 yards. I think he kind of set an example of what we can do and what we have the ability to do, and we have to keep plugging away at some of those things. I felt like we made some good adjustments at the half to their four-four stack and gap change on the blitzes and I think our guys did a good job picking it up. I know Frasure had 71 at halftime. The run- ning clock in the second half and he was still got almost 40 yards in the second half as well, and a nice 14-yard run, but then fumbled the ball on the drive. He should have had some more, a 130 or 135 -yard night, but you just can't turn the ball over in that situation. He had a 14-yard gain for the first down but then we fum- bled." Asked about the cold, coach said, "I don't know about the cold. Wyatt is like a bron- co when he runs the ball. He flays everything, running that ball hard. I watched it happen. The center did a great job, well coached up, went textbook and punched that ball out. I don't think there was any lack of ball security. I thought it was a hard run with Frasure fight- ing for every yard he could and then also a heads up play, a smart savvy play by the North Posey kid. It is a little harder to keep a grip on a night like tonight. You don't get that nat- ural sweat that you would get with the leather sticking. It's a little bit slick, so it's kudos to them for a heads up play, but it is one of those things. I wouldn't change the way Fra- sure runs the ball. I like the way he fights hard and some- times bad things happen, they aren't bad things, just wrong things." Asked about North Posey passing, coach said, "We were going to try to put it in a sit- uation where they pass 53 percent of the time and that left-handed quarterback can throw the ball well, and he's athletic and gets it down the field. We were hoping to heat him up with pressure and kind of force them into errors, and I think there were times when we were able to do that. A fter Colson Dillard's injury, they changed up some of the per- sonnel that we were able to have. I think North Posey did a great job of taking advantage of mismatch. They identified it and called plays to attack right in that area. When you put the scheme together, you put it for the week defensively and have the best chance for success, but it's where we have the least amount of depth and that's not anyone's fault. Once you get to Friday night, you're kind of committed to the scheme. It's too late in the process to go, 'Hey, we are going to do some- thing completely different that better suits.' We hope we don't get an injury in one position or another, but unfortunately, re- peatedly, the one spot we can't afford to get hurt at is the spot it happens. Let's just hope that we don't get an injury in the one position. The credit goes to North Posey. They had a good staff, a bunch of coach- es over there. I'm sure one of those guys said we have a mis- match in this area, let's take advantage of it, and they did a great job of it." Regarding the false start on the Vikes before the ex- tra point attempt, coach said, "That's something coach Pow- ell did here before I got here. It's the way we go about our approach. We set our hands down on the extra point. The whole idea is a different look, a unique look that other teams don't usually give. An old school team thing from the 1970s. We've kind of kept it in place and it worked. It always works. What we like about that is it gives us half the distance to the goal and gives you an opportunity for two. It was one of those things the whole team went with Jag. It's a good deal. Definitely part of our weekly game plan. I'm sure their coaches tell them to watch for it, but sometimes you can't be coaches, you have to be 16 -year-old kids. We can get teams to go for that usu- ally. Our kids did a great job. What they don't see is how many times we mess that up in practice when everyone's hands do not go down at the same time." Wyatt Frasure carried the ball 11 times for 104 yards and one TD. Arri McDonald took five snaps for 13 yards, Gish was seven for zero net and Jagar Dent was nine for -9. Dent was good for six of nine for 28 yards, with Lars Utter- back one for 18 yards. Gish had two for eight yards, Mc- Donald one for seven and Fra- sure caught two for a -5. Bender was four for eight for 70 yards and two TDs. Brady Reidford was 10 for 83 and two TDs. Dalton Reid- ford caught two for 35 yards and one TD. Total offense for Pike Cen- tral was 145 and North Posey 263. Pike Central had two fumbles and both lost while North Posey was 0 -0. Pike Central had five first downs and five punts, while North Posey made 11 first downs and two punts. Pike Central was assessed two penalties for 15 yards and North Posey four for 40 yards. PC: 8 0 0 8: 16 NP: 27 7 17 7: 58 The Chargers face Wash- ington on Friday at 7 p.m. in the IHSA A Sectional 30. On September 18, Pike Cen- tral fell by the score of 44-21 to Washington at their place. That tussle could have been a toss up at several points in the game. The Chargers had two Fridays off following that con- test and finally on October 9, the Chargers got on the field hosting the Forest Park Rang- ers. They finished the regular season short two games, hav- ing scored 69 points with a re- cord of 0 -7. Washington is 3-6 with a 2-4 conference record, having lost to Mt. Vernon 56 -8. In recent Pocket Athlet- ic Conference action, Pike Central fell to Tecumseh 39 - 0, South Spencer 48 -0, South- ridge 58 -0 and then the For- est Park Rangers 49 -6. Ear- lier in the season, the South- ridge Raiders bettered the North Posey Vikings 55 -21, beat South Spencer 48 -3 and then Heritage Hills 34-14 on October 8. Wins of 27-15 over Tecum- seh and 27-7 against South Spencer were not run-aways for the North Posey Vikings, however, the 35 -34 loss to Her- itage Hills three weeks prior did show that they could score often with help from Harold Bender. Against Tecumseh, he completed 22 of 29 for 280 yards and two touchdowns. In the 27-7 win over South Spen- cer, Bender was just nine of 16 for 96 yards and just one touchdown, but Brady Reid- ford was the rusher who found pay dirt to make up the differ- ence. Freshman Arri McDonald carried the ball five times, netting 13 yards against the North Posey Vikings. James Capozella photos Freshman Wyatt Frasure takes a hand-off from Charger quarterback Jagar Dent during Friday's PAC clash with the North Posey Vikings. Frasure racked up 104 yards rushing on 11 carries.
