Features Page 3 May 3, 2013 Many aspects put into production of Prom This year's prom committee is hard at work in attempt to make this prom the best yet Tymber Bealer Staff Writer The 2013 senior prom is already here! The date is set for Saturday, May 4th from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. The theme this year is A Night in the Roaring 20's. The hopes for this theme is to be modeled after The Greatr Gatsby. To put the entire prom together it takes a lot of hard work and it also takes a lot of different people. To make it easier, the 2012 – 2013 leadership class breaks itself down into different decorating groups. Breaking down into these groups makes it easier and faster to get the decorating done in a quick and successful way. Something unique that the decorating committee does is they not only decorate inside the gym, but they also bring their decorations inside the bathrooms. They put tables in the bathrooms and create center pieces and surround them with small perfumes and mints. All of the center pieces match the decor perfectly. They have Cartoon by Kellie Rodriguez white feathers and beads to go along with the 20's theme. Something that is different about prom compared to other dances that the school holds is that the decorating committee starts working on this dance weeks ahead of time. The reasoning for the early planning is to insure that this dance will be as perfect and flawless as it can possibly be for all the anticipating seniors. During these weeks of hard work the leadership class comes up with the theme of the prom and all the decorations that will come along with it. Many traditions have started due to prom. One specific tradition that has come about is that after a senior buys their ticket for the prom they receive a gift. This year, the gift has been chosen to be a cup that has something revolving around the prom of 2013. The gift that seniors will receive this year is different from years past. The committy tried to make this year's gift have better quality and use then the gifts in the past years. Also, for the gift they wanted something that was more usable for the seniors. This years gift is a plastic cup. Walker printing prints all the bids for Prom for free as a donation to Red Bluff High School. These bids look a lot more professional than the other bids from the different dances our school holds. Michaella Hutchens is a sophomore that is a part of the decorating committy this year. "It's nice to be able to work on prom bids because you have input on how they turn out," said Hutchens. Although this Prom is mostly similar to all the other Proms we have held, there has been many small changes. Due to the changes, this years senior prom will look better and it will run along more smoothly. Boosters helps to Red Bluff High showcases provide for sports its talent in annual show Mark Chriss Staff Writer Many families cannot always provide the money for extra expenses when it comes to school activities. Thankfully enough Red Bluff high school district has the boosters to help them with many many issues that not only involve the sports system but also a great deal of money for the actual school. For all of the Red Bluff high Spartans, whether an athlete or just a student, the Boosters is a very smart way that Ken Robison came up with in his head to help support the Red Bluff high sports teams. Earlier this year the boosters helped to raise a good amount of money for the basket ball team. "They have really done a lot for us," said Mr. Wagner, computer lit teacher. Also according to Wagner the booster clubs money has helped a lot with team uniforms in the past. Here is a thought for those athletic Spartans out there, think of all the gear you have to wear for your special sport. Whether its pads for your legs or just a jersey to show team spirit. Now think of how your team would look without all those things? How you would compete without those pads? That is one of the many great things that the boosters help provide. So next time when your sports team is having a fundraiser, try a little harder to sell that extra ticket or box of chocolates because it just may be the difference between the uniform your team needs, and not having the funds to get that uniform. Mr. Wagner also stated that he does not work for the boosters and if more info is wanted you should try to contact Ken Robison. This program is an awesome thing to have involved with the school. It gives students more of a chance to be incorporated in extra curricular activities. Just remember to be respectful and show the outside world just how great red bluff high is. Hunter Latham Staff Writer Somebody needs to call up the hit TV show, America's Got Talent, and tell them to spread apart and make room for Red Bluff Spartans Have Talent. The Red Bluff High School talent show is quickly approaching. This year the talent show will be held on Thursday, May 16. The talent show can be a great way to impress your friends or maybe that "certain someone" by showing off whatever unique talent you have. Sometimes people who perform in talent shows even make new friends. Everyone is unique in their own way, but the people who try hard to obtain or master a talent can grow up to be extremely talented. But in order to get a desired talent, said person needs to practice. Being a talented person isn't always something that comes naturally. In fact, most people who have an awesome talent started Host an International Student! We are seeking volunteer families to host a student for 1 or 2 semesters. Our students come from 25 different countries. Host families have the opportunity to review the applications and select the student they want to welcome into their home. Students have medical insurance and spending money. Host families provide room and board, some transportation, and share their American and family traditions. When someone works so hard to become good at something, they end up being admired by practically everyone that " I'm excited to see students showcase their hidden talents and be recognized by their student body." -Garrett Ward knows them. This is because these people have the desire to achieve the greatest. It's not always just the fact that you are good at something that wows people and gets their attention, it is sometimes the knowledge that the person worked so hard to be good at something. People can easily be amazed by the fact that someone worked hard, and it will make your family and younger siblings look up to you and think "wow, my family member worked so hard to reach the top, and now he/she's there!" Even if you are deep down depressed about all the time you think you have "wasted"at trying to be good at something and sadly it turns out that your hard work didn't pay off as well as you thought it was going to, your friends and family will be impressed by how hard you tried. The talent shows are normally filled with singing, dancing, and instrument playing. The school is open to any and all talents that students bring their way. There is a maximum of 13 spots in the talent show and it is always a "fantastic" show. S partan ound off What is your favorite part about prom? Why? Marcos Ramirez (12) "All the ladies are going to be looking fine and I get to dance with them." Lily Bertelson (12) "Getting a dress because it is fun to go shopping with your friends." Peter Mitzel (12) "Going to dinner with friends because it is one of the last times we can all get togetrher." Jessica Dawson (12) "Getting to go dance with my friends." Spartan Health Alexis Simpkins Staff Writer We usually use the word "stress" when we feel like everything in our lives has become too much. Stress can be a good thing. It keeps us aware and ready to stay away from danger. Our body is able to handle shortterm stress, but when it comes to being seriously stressed for long periods of time, it can be harmful to your body. One of many effects of stress is that the brain's sympathetic nerves signal the adrenal glands to release a chemical pair of adrenaline and cortisol. Constantly high levels of these chemicals could impair memory, learning, and increase your chances of depression. Another outcome is when brief minor stress, like when you're walking down the aisle to get married, will make your heart beat faster and blood pressure rise. Long-term stress, can cause narrowing of the arteries and raise cholesterol levels, making your chances of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke, much higher. For women, stress can also extend or shorten your menstrual cycle, stop it altogether, or make your periods more painful. High levels of stress make bacterial vaginosis, a vaginal infection, more likely and, during pregnancy, may increase the chance of your baby developing asthma or allergies later in life. A little stress can actually boost your immune system and help your body fight infection, but ongoing stress can turn things the other direction. Wound healing can become slow, leaving you at risk for infection and worsening skin conditions such as eczema, hives, and acne.  Overall, a little shortterm stress never hurt anyone, but if you let it get out of hand, you may be hurting yourself much more than you think. Mr. Barriga (principal) "Not being able to recognize the students when they come in because they are all formal." Mrs. Dausse (teacher) "When it is over because I have been working on it since December." Sound Off/Claire Samay
