He currently was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he remained active until his health declined. On December 29, 1951, he married Joyce Marie Stanley, and this past year they cel- ebrated sixty-eight years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling together to all fifty states and other worldwide destinations. They had three children: Judith "Judy" Wright (Barry), Sherri Beam (Zeb III), and Richard "Rick" Morgan (Georgann). Also surviving are five grandchil- dren, Ashley Wright, Lance Wright (Briana); Morgan Beam McCraw (Chris), Zeb Beam, IV (Lindsey); and Emily Hunnicutt Clary (Wesley), and seven great- grandchildren, Calleigh and Caide Wright, Gunnar and Dalton McCraw, and Abby, Macey, and Lily Clary. Also surviving Richard are siblings Joann Varni, Brenda Hoover, Barbara Luckert, Tina Brown, Patty Mason, and Gary Parris. Due to the current health crisis, Richard will lie in state for friends to pay their respects from 2:00-5:00 PM on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory. A private celebration of life will be held at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, April 29, 2020 followed by burial at Cleveland Memorial Park, Shelby, NC, with Dr. Tim Sims officiating. In lieu of flowers, expres- sions of sympathy would be appreciated to Bethel Baptist Church, 606 S. Dekalb Street, Shelby, NC, or a char- ity of the donor's choice. AGNES SPLAWN Agnes Splawn, age 71, of Caroleen, passed away Monday, April 27, 2020 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Agnes was born February 25, 1949 in Rutherford County to the late Scott Wilson and Mary Louise Tucker Wilson. She was a graduate of Chase High School, class of 1967. Agnes worked for Cone Mills- Avondale Plant and Sara Lee National Textiles for many years. She most recently worked as a cashier for Wal- Mart. Agnes was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Ellenboro and enjoyed read- ing, playing games on her I-Pad, and doing yard-work. She was a dedicated mother and loved her family dearly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Gerald Splawn and brother, Reginald "Reggie" Wilson. nephews, other relatives and friends. Due to recent coronavirus state guidelines limiting the size of gatherings, the ser- vice for Mr. Crank will be private. He may be viewed on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at Mountain View Baptist Church from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM with a reception of friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at the church. VERL VIRGINIA M. CASH Verl Virginia M. Cash, age 80, passed away on April 26, 2020 at Summit Place of Kings Mountain. She is survived by two sons, Tony McDaniel of Lawndale, NC, and Mark McDaniel of Shelby, NC, three grand- children, Sherry McDaniel of Lawndale, NC, Kristen Bennett and husband Wesley of Cherryville, NC, and Justin McDaniel of Atlanta, GA, and a great granddaughter, Deornda Davis. Born in Cleveland County on June 22, 1939, Verl was the daughter of the late Rufus and Evelyn Tesseneer Mellon. She was also pre- ceded in death by a brother, Ralph Mellon, and four sis- ters, Margaret Mellon, Dot Hunt, Faye Albea, and Ruth Mellon. RICHARD ALBERT MORGAN Richard Albert Morgan, age 86, died Sunday, April 26, 2020, at home surrounded by his wife and three children. Richard was born in Shelby, NC, on November 25, 1933, to the late Lonnie Edgar Morgan and Eula Bessie Smith Parris. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jeannie Kuhlman. He attended Shelby City Schools as well as Belmont Textile Schools. His early career was in textiles with the Dover Group at Dover and Ora Mills and later at Shelby Mills. Subsequently, he became a licensed insur- ance agent and worked at Western-Southern Life and retired from Farm Bureau Insurance. Richard proudly served his country for fourteen-and- a-half years in the National Guard. ROBERT LEWIS CRANK, SR. Mr. Robert Lewis Crank, Sr., 81, of 414 Marys Grove Church Road Kings Mountain, NC passed away on Monday, April 20, 2020 at his residence. He was born on August 4, 1938 in Gaston County, NC to the late Moses Ezekiel Crank and Ella Bell Kennedy Crank. Deacon Crank was a mem- ber of Mountain View Baptist Church where he served as the head deacon for 38 years. He loved to sing and previously sang with the Shinnettes Gospel Quartet. A family oriented man at heart, he was married for 53 years to his wife Eula Camp Crank and to this union three children were born, Robert, Jr., Janie and Marshall. He loved his family and espe- cially enjoyed doting on his grandchildren. Before retiring, Deacon Crank was employed with Mohican Mills and was employed part-time with both Crest High and Washington Elementary Schools. Always one who kept busy, he enjoyed doing yard work, gardening and working on cars. He was known for his well kept yard and his green thumb. He also enjoyed watching sports and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy C. Lewis, Marie Crank, Elizabeth C. Sinclair and Ellatta Bernice C. Williams. He leaves to cherish long and lasting memories to his wife, Eula C. Born May 24, 1948 in Cleveland County, Jean was the daughter of the late William Herman Hughes Sr. and Earline Watts Hughes. Jean worked for more than 40 years at Shelby Eye Center. She was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church in Shelby. Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who enjoyed shopping, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. CHARLES GORDON LAMPLEY III Dr. Charles Gordon Lampley III, 83, left the arms of his family and sailed away from his earthly port to be with his Creator on April 25, 2020. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and an infant son, Luke Leland Lampley. The world has lost an extraordi- nary husband, father, grand- father, friend, and physician. He was born on April 6, 1937, in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina, to the late Charles Gordon Lampley II and Margaret Henry Lampley. Charlie graduated from Shelby High School in 1955. He graduated from his beloved Davidson College in 1958 where he was a wrestler. He graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1962 and com- pleted his residency there in obstetrics and gynecology in 1966. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy serv- ing as a physician at Camp Lejeune, NC. In 1968, he returned to Shelby and joined the prac- tice his father started, Shelby Women's Clinic. He retired from there in 1998. His joy came from being a father and a husband. A true renaissance man, a roman- tic, Charlie's life exemplified his many different interests and passions. He was "The Stork" to many in Cleveland County where he was an OB-GYN, delivering many of the county's population. He was a lifelong, enthusi- astic learner of many sub- jects, attending classes at Davidson from the time he retired College until just months before he passed Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Robert "Robbie" Splawn (Misty) of Bostic; daughter, Lynn Splawn of Caroleen; sister, Gloria Holland (Randy) of Lattimore; brother, Ronald "Ronnie" Wilson (Mary Jo) of Rutherfordton and several nieces and nephews. An online guest registry is available at www.harrelson- funeralhome.com BRENDA FAITH GOODSON BIDDIX Brenda Faith Goodson Biddix, 78, of Midlothian, VA, passed away on April 27, 2020 after a long illness at Bickford Nursing facil- ity in Midlothian, VA. Born in Gaston County NC, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Clyde Goodson and Louise Phillips Goodson. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, James (Jay) David Biddix and brothers Robert Goodson and Charles Goodson. Brenda was retired from Grover Industries. She was a member of East Gold Street Wesleyan Church and also attended Bon Air Baptist Church in Richmond, VA. Brenda was a loving wife to Jay, mother to Jayda, and Mimi to her grandchildren. Her love for her family, her church, and the Lord was strong and inspiring. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, espe- cially her warm laugh and her beautiful soprano singing voice. JEAN HUGHES PEELER Jean Hughes Peeler, age 71 of Shelby, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 27, 2020. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Hugh away. He was a lover of many art forms, including classical music, woodwork- ing, playing the dulcimer, and was an avid supporter of WDAV. He was a Master Gardener, a collector of nature, who appreciated the beauty of Japanese Maples, azaleas, and rhododendrons down to the tiniest seed. He appreciated the arts - Bach, Beethoven, Maria Callas, Michelangelo, DaVinci, and his favorite artist and poet, his daughter, Cassie. He was an avid traveler and storytell- er, a lover of wine, food, and friendship, an accomplished sailor, a scuba diver, a skier, a beekeeper, a genealo- gist, a lover of Greek cul- ture, a mentor to youth at Jefferson and Rock Springs Elementary School, and served as a deacon and an elder at Shelby and Unity Presbyterian Churches. His faith in Christ was the cen- tral guiding principle of his life. Charlie was a nurturer and a healer. He brought 10,000 babies into this world and his most precious time was spent being a father to his own three, Chuck, Mark, and his daughter, Cassie. He greatly admired the tenac- ity of the human spirit and loved to tend and watch life grow, from tiny embryos to beautiful humans, from delicate seeds and saplings to their majestic glory. He never stopped teaching, liv- ing, learning, storytelling, or listening. He loved us uncon- ditionally. He taught us how to love, learn, and know God. His love and wisdom will sus- tain us in our healing. He will continue to guide and par- ent Cassie from God's side. The unbearable pain felt by his loss is a reflection of how fully loved and deeply missed he is by his family and friends. People were drawn to him - to know him was to love him or want to be his friend. He is survived by his true heart's companion and wife, Tammy MacKinnon Lampley, and his daugh- ter, Cassie Emma Grace Lampley of Denver, NC; his sister, Ann Lampley Pharr of Shelby, NC, his sons, Charles Gordon Lampley IV (Laura) of Shelby, NC, and Mark David Lampley (Karen) of Knoxville, TN. He had five grandchildren: Elizabeth, Sydney, Sarah, Meg, and Luke. The family will have a private ceremony to honor Charlie's life in Denver, NC, and a celebration of life ser- vice at a later time.
