TED SORRELS BEAM Ted Sorrels Beam, age 78 of Eaker Rd. passed away Friday, April 24, 2020 at his residence. He was born September 13, 1941 in Lincoln County to the late J. Ray and Mae Sorrels Beam. Ted was a North Brook Icon where he grew up spending time at Flay Store which his parents owned and was known back in the day as "Romeo." He grad- uated from North Brook High School in 1959 and still enjoyed getting togeth- er with his classmates for their monthly meetings at Mitchems Kitchen. After graduation he went to Western Carolina, where he played the trumpet and then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army. Ted was a member of Bessemer City American Legion Post #243. He was a member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church and a member of the Hoyle Reunion. He enjoyed a career in farming and then he and his wife, Sue owned T&T Beauty and Barber Supply where he loved to deliver supplies and interact with their custom- ers. Anywhere he went, he always ran into someone he knew. He loved visiting with his neighbors and friends and enjoyed riding his golf- cart to the Saturday Night Gatherings at the Woodward Family Home. He looked forward to his daily after- noon visits from John Wes Lail, enjoyed going to the lake and beach and any- where else with his wife and traveling companions, the late Mike and Linda Eaker. He ran Beam's Speedway Go Kart Track, liked to drive racecars, and rac- BETTY WRIGHT BLACK Betty Wright Black, age 88, formerly of Crescent Dr. in Cherryville, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2020 at her residence on Binwhe Lane in Gastonia. She was born January 9, 1932 in Cleveland County to the late Bonnie and Edna McSwain Wright. Mrs. Black was the last founding and charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. With her late hus- band, she owned and oper- ated Cleveland Appliance and Furniture Company and Betty Black Real Estate. Her last career was as an insurance agent with Metropolitan Life. Betty was a member of the Cherryville Chapter of Eastern Star serving in many positions including Worthy Matron. She enjoyed gardening and had a green thumb and the abil- ity to make anything grow. Her greatest joy in life was her family and she cherished every moment spent with fam- ily and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Mark Black, Jr.; children, Johnny Black and Jackie Ware; and sisters, Linda Wright and Ruth Cook. Survivors include her daugh- ters, Jamie Cain and fiancé, Joe Ashby of Cana, VA, and Sador Black of Kingsport, TN; sisters, Jane Willis and hus- band Tommy and Cloe Hovis and husband, Duke; grand- children, Stephanie Wellman and husband, Matthew of Gastonia, John Black IV and wife, Heather of Cherryville, Morgan Cain of Cana, VA, and Maycee Cain of Cana, VA; and great grandchildren, Holden Wellman, Brooklyn Black, Ava Black, Keara Dills, Aiden Dills, Landon Cain, and Ace Cain. Due to the current COVID- 19 crisis, a small graveside JAMES DONALD "DON" McABEE James Donald "Don" McAbee, 78 of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on April 24, 2020 at Atrium Health, Kings Mountain, NC. Born in Cleveland County, NC, He was son of the late James Russell and Josephine (Goins) McAbee. He was preceded in death by a step-son, Tom Blanton; brothers, Tommy and Ronald Dean McAbee; sister, Brenda Foster. Don worked in his fam- ily business, Mac's Grocery, where he was a meat cutter and cook. He was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church, Kings Mountain. NC where he served as deacon, and a member of the choir. He also served one term with the Kings Mountain City Council, He was a wonderful husband and provider who loved his family dearly. He enjoyed playing golf. Don will be missed greatly by his loving family and many friends. Survivors: Wife of 48 years: Helen Alberta McAbee, Kings Mountain, NC; Step-son: Billy Blanton, Florida; Step-daughters: Patricia Hartley (Gene) Hudson, NC; Penny Self (Leonard) Hendersonville, NC; Brothers: Kenny McAbee and Danny McAbee (Wendy); Sisters: Sue Holmes (Gene), Wanda Wilson (Bill), Cheryel Pearson (Ronnie); 6 Step- grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. JOHN HAROLD LEMONS John Harold Lemons, 81, of Shelby, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at Southern Oaks Care in Greenville, SC. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Brenda Lemons, his son, Ryan Lemons, and two sisters Brenda Wheat of S.C. and Kim Yarbro and husband Jeff, of Kings Mountain, his mother-in-law Pauline Wright and several nieces and neph- ews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bejamin Elzie Lemons and Sudie Bailey Lemons, sisters, Lucille Lemons, Elizabeth Carpenter, Joyce Gardner, and two broth- ers, Floyd Lemons, and Larry Lemons. A loving husband and father, he was a native of Cleveland Co. Harold was retired from Celanese after 40 years. He was a longtime member of Double Springs Baptist Church. He loved to volun- teer for whatever projects the group of men known as the "Renegades" were involved in. He served as a deacon and loved his Sunday school class. A private family graveside service will be held at Double Springs Baptist Church at a later date. He was known to piddle on things, was always quick witted, and enjoyed playing with his dog, Buddy. He loved watching his daughters and then grandchildren play ball. Time spent with his fam- ily, friends, and especially the grandchildren was his greatest pastime. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Keith Beam; and niece, Noel Beam Howard. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Sue Helms Beam; daughters, Tammy Beam Knowles and husband, David and Teddi Beam Stepp and husband, Jeff; grandchildren, Allison Knowles McInnis (Sam) and Lukas Knowles; nephew, Mark Beam (Johnnie); and niece, Lucy Beam Hoffman (Jeff). A Drive-In Funeral will be held Monday, April 27, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Carpenter- Porter Funeral & Cremation Services with Rev. Leonard Bumgardner officiating and music by Josh Hudson. Mr. Beam will lie in state on Monday from 9:00 to 12:00 PM. Friends are invited to stop by the funeral home and then if staying for the service, we ask that you remain in your vehicles. Shelby: Allie Martin Jr., 91, died Sunday, April 26, 2020, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Allie H. and Lola Brooks Martin. Allie worked at Bost Bakery of Shelby for over 43 years, and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church for over 65 years, and usher for 50 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Alice H. Martin. He is survived by his son, Jerry Martin and wife Anne; daughter, Faye Craft and hus- band Phil, both of Shelby; a very special sister, Mildred Carpenter of Kings Mountain; grandchildren, Donnie Martin of Shelby, Chris Craft and wife Lisa of Oak Ridge, NC, and Lisa Kale and husband Jonathan of Boiling Springs, NC; great grandchildren, Cody Kale and wife Taylor, Dylan Kale of Boiling Springs, Adam and Sydney Craft of Oak Ridge; and several niec- es and nephews.
