Southridge finished behind the Patriot's 163 points with 91, fol- lowed by third place Pike Central with 84. Tecumseh placed fourth, North Posey fifth, South Spencer sixth and Wood Memorial seventh. Seitz broke the ten-year-old PAC 200 me- ter record with a 25.74 clocking that should last another ten years, but we'll wait and see since she has regularly bettered her own school record. She also grabbed the 100 me- ter dash crown with a 12.64. Michelle Mason ran unchallenged in the 3200 race, easily handling the event after a hard head to head sprint against Patri- ot Sara Wetzel in the 1600 -meter run. She ran a personal best in order to edge Ma- son in the final 150 yards. Mason finished in 5:49.56, breaking the old school record of 5:50.7 belonging to Connie Hopf from 1984. Kam Shelby ran 6:18.54 to place fourth for the Chargers. The 3200 win for Mason was 13:00.7 with Christine Adams placing sev- enth in 15:30. Pike Central's next best competitor was Heather Blaize taking second in the 800 -me- ter run with a 2:42.37 clocking. Jenny Readle placed third with a 1:05.19 in the 400 meter dash. Valli Shoultz was a third place finisher in the 100 -meter hurdles with teammate Jacy Robling close behind in fifth. Shoultz also had a sixth in the 300 -meter hurdles with a 54.78 while Patriot Kara Arnold broke a meet record with a 48.65 win. Adams was fourth in the discus taping 91'5" while Jacy Robling placed sixth in the shotput with a 28'4" toss. Mim Robling cleared a personal high in a night long struggle with Maria Wetzel, Michelle VanWinkle and Joey Norman. Robling placed fourth with a 5'3" effort in high jump. Vanwinkle tied the old 5'4" PAC record set in 1988 by Raider Amy Kissling and Tecumseh's Amy Erwin in 1987. Wetzel cleared the bar at 5'41/2" for a new record. The Charger 1600 -meter relay consist- ing of Jenny Voyles, Stacey Robling, Jenny Readle and Michelle Mason placed third in 4:34.3. The 400 -meter relay consisting of Mim Robling, Chastity Deffendoll, Val- li Shoultz and And anchor Tracey Seitz fin- ished fourth with a 54.87 clocking. Coach Elaine Barrett is pleased with the team's 20 -7 dual meet record and consid- ered the effort at the PAC to have been sat- isfying. She stated, "I really thought we'd beat Southridge although I had no doubt that Heritage Hills would finish first. I feel we did the best we could. It's been a good season considering injuries, not bad." Looking back: 1991 Pike Central track success The Spring of 1991 was a good year for Pike Central sports. Below are stories about the 1991 Chargers in the Pocket Athletic Conference championships. Tracey Seitz and Michelle Mason both set school records and Seitz set a conference record in the meet. The boys track team won their first team PAC championship as they were led by Chris Marchino and Joe Furman both winning three events. The girls' tennis team were conference champions as well. Coach Stan Shoultz and Chris Morton hold up an exhausted Joey Furman after Furman anchored the 1600 meter relay team to a first place finish in the last running event of the Pocket Athletic Conference championship meet. Pike Central won the event for the first time. Furman also won the 1500 and 800 meter runs. File photo. Girls clinch PAC tennis crown in conference meet Thursday, May 16, 1991 The Pike Central girls' tennis team won the PAC tourney Tuesday evening, despite one uncompleted match, The Lady Char- gers have 11 points with Heritage Hills scor- ing eight. The number two doubles team of Emily Gaskins and Rachel Deffendoll was playing the third set against the Heritage Hills team when the match was delayed by rain. The tourney was scheduled to conclude Wednes- day evening, weather permitting. Coach Jodi Elkins said the "girls were elated with the win." Earlier in the evening Mandi Corn had won her number three singles match, de- feating Heidi Tribe of Tecumseh, 2-6, 6 -2, 6 -2, for the championship. The Other Championship came at num- ber one doubles when Cher Brown and Brandi Luff defeated Tecumseh's number one team, 6 -1, 6 -4. Trish Deffendoll finished second at num- ber one singles, losing to Kena Liniger of Wood Memorial, 2-6, 2-6. Liniger was the number one seed at first singles. The tourney began on Saturday at Tecum- seh. There was a short rain delay that af- ternoon, but following a downpour the play was stopped and resumed Monday evening. Beth Hatfield, who had lost in the regu- lar season, dropped her opening match in straight sets on Saturday. The team drew a bye in the sectional will meet the winner of the Princeton-Vincennes match at 9 a.m. Saturday at Vincennes. Charger boys claim first PAC track title Thursday, May 16, 1991 The scoring came down to the wire, but the Pike Central boys' track team won the 1600 -meter relay, and in so doing captured the championship of the PAC track meet. With all events posted except the 1600 -meter relay and the pole vault, the Chargers were tied with the Patriots. The win in the relay gave Pike Central a two- point win. This was the team's first championship in the school's history. The Chargers were runners-up to Southridge last year, losing only by three points. Two years ago the team finished last in the seven-team meet. Chargers' Coach Stan Shoultz said the se- niors "remembered the past two years and were determined Thursday night." Shoultz, along with coaches Steve Car- ter and Mike Whitten, were happy with the team who finished the season with a 31-0 re- cord. Shoultz said "They're great athletes and great kids. They deserve all the credit. They've really worked hard. We feel pretty good about it." The Chargers had six individual firsts in the meet. They came from three team members who were double winners. Chris Marchini won both the 110 -meter high hur- dles and the 300 -meter low hurdles. He set a new PAC record of 14.97 in the high hur- dles, eclipsing a time of 15.17, set by Joey Lange of Southridge in 1982. Joey Furman won both the 800 -meters and the 1600 -meter run. J.R. Meadors was the winner of the Long Jump and the high jump. The 1600 -meter relay team of Clint Pride, Chris Bailey, Chris Morton and Joey Fur- man, was victorious despite a strong chal- lenge from Heritage Hills. Heritage Hills finished second with 122 points, winning four events. Southridge, which was third with 94 points, and won the other four events. Josh Wilson of Heritage Hills and Mark Buse of Southridge set three records in the meet. Wilson was first with Buse second in the 100 -meter dash, both breaking the PAC record of :11.13 set by Wilson last year. This year Wilson was timed at :10.79 while Buse's time was :10.88. Buse set a new meet record in the 200 -me- ter dash at :22.50, eclipsing the record set by Pat Crews of Heritage Hills in 1984. He also broke his own pole vault record, clear- ing 16'1". His old record was 16 feet, set last year. Following a dual meet at North Knox, the boys' track team will compete in the section- al track meet at Evansville Central Thurs- day evening.
