Catawba Valley Sat., June 19 • 7:05 It will not be long before everyone in Rutherford County and beyond will know the name, Rick Austin! H This is a man who is determined to achieve and has the passion to "get it done"! He is hands on, no holds barred, and wants to give Rutherford County the best! Rick Austin has a 30 year background of high achievements. His expertise includes marketing, experience in mass media, television, the internet, managing people, vendors, product management as well as writing, producing and directing television shows, films, video, infomercials, interactive CD's and DVD's. He has launched over 400 products in his career. He was one of the founding members of the Disney National Entrepreneur Center. He also launched the first lap-top computer as well as many other products that are now commonplace in our workplace and homes. He brought his talents to North Carolina to Project GATE (Growing America Through Entrepreneurship). There are now more people who have their own business through his efforts in this program in Rutherford and Polk Counties than any other GATE location in this state. In marketing and advertising he is sought out to teach, lecture and advise. Rick Austin's achievements are overwhelming! The most important thing to remember is that despite his versatility now, as Executive Director of the Rutherford Chamber of Commerce, he has but one thing in mind - jobs! He wants to create and bring jobs to Rutherford County. His single focus - jobs - lots of jobs! When we sat down with Rick he presented his very logical and well made powerpoint of what has to be done. It is an in depth review of the present economic situation, what caused it, what is needed, and how it can be done. He has the plan in place and has already begun to execute it. The most impressive thing you are impressed with when you take the time to listen to this man, is his determination and dedication. He will not take no for an answer! His goals are high! Should he achieve them, Rick Austin will not only be thanked by a grateful county, but also become our citizens hero. We have no doubt that reaching his goal is not only possible, but within the realm of suc- cess! To understand this, you have only to meet and spend some time with this man. A new preacher with a big commu- nity commitment began what he hopes to be an annual event. He is the Reverend Charles McClure, of Mountain Creek Baptist Church. Preacher McClure said, if need be, the church could sponsor such an event more than once a year. The first Gilkey Health and Info Fair was crowded with people gathering information, getting free haircuts, eating free funnel cakes, hot dogs and homemade desserts as well as having their kids registered for identification and child protection photos. There were 100 point car checks to help advise drivers how to properly take care of their vehicles. The Gideons were there with information, new testaments and now, greeting cards. Each child was given a gift bag. The Mountain Creek Church Bluegrass Band entertained. The event was a constant flow of information and neighbors meeting neighbors. Reverend McClure, who has only been at Mountain Creek since March, says he wants to establish the fair as a "focal point for the community". He feels that there is information and community caring which needs to be part of this upcounty outreach program. He intends to fill a void, with the first fair being a great start!
