The coach may have found it difficult to determine who finished first and looked to other spectators for advice. The same situation can happen with the Kentucky Derby and other horse races. When two or more horses stay neck and neck and appear to cross the finish line at the same time, this is known as a dead heat in horse racing. To determine the winner of a dead heat, officials rely on photo finish technology.
