The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, Januar y 22, 2020 B- 3 Trojans spoil homecoming for Chargers By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Wood Memorial boys' bas- ketball team spoiled Pike Cen- tral's homecoming on Saturday, Jan. 18, with a 42-26 victory. The Chargers started the game a little slow before they battled back to tie it 22-22 at halftime, but the Trojans (3-9, 1-1 Blue Chip) dominated the fourth quarter, out- scoring the Chargers 13-0. "They really beat us pretty good in the fourth," Pike Central head coach Hunter Elliott said. "Their game plan was to pack it in a zone and make us shoot, and that night, we just didn't shoot the ball well at all. We were content on pass- ing around the zone and taking 3-pointers instead of attacking in- side. I did not do a good enough job in this game getting our kids in the right position. This was a game I felt like we should win and I need to do a better job of lead- ing and teaching these boys how to handle adversity and overcom- ing obstacles." Pike Central (1-9, 0 -2 PAC) let its emotions get the best of them late in the game. "We didn't handle not shooting the ball well," Elliott said. "We were taking open shots, but they just were not falling and we have to learn how to win games be- sides with just the 3-pointer. This group has the ability to shoot the ball very well, but when that is not working, we must find anoth- er way to score instead of settling." Elliott said he was proud of Ethan Scott again for his leader- ship and effort in this game. "He has come such a long way and I thought he did a great job leading tonight even when his shot was not falling," he said. "I thought Ethan Gorby did a great job ear- ly being aggressive and getting to the rim and free throw line, which is something we need him doing more of going forward." Gorby led the Chargers with eight points, five rebounds and a block, and Scott had six points, an assist, a steal and two rebounds. Sean Hanselman finished with six points, three rebounds and a steal; Jade Guth had two points, two assists and three rebounds; Colin Craig scored two points and grabbed four rebounds; Hunter DeHaven had two points and five rebounds; and Alex Clark had a rebound. Wood Memorial was led by Grif- fin Parke with 16 points. Other Trojan scorers were Colton Page (8), Logan Keeker (6), Grant Hale (4), Kayne McCandless (4) and Justin Stickland (4). Pike Central also lost to Class 3A No. 3 Heritage Hills (10 -3, 4-0 PAC) on Friday, Jan. 17. The Patriots defeated the Char- gers, 77-48. "Going into the Heritage Hills game, we knew that they were one of the best teams in the state," El- liott said. "We came out and han- dled their pressure very well ear- ly on and attacked it for layups. We knew that they really want to push the tempo and that our transition defense would be key. We worked on it, but it is very difficult to sim- ulate the speed and athleticism of Heritage Hills and they really took advantage of getting out and run- ning." Pike Central trailed by as much as 18 early in the game before they finished the first half on a 9 -0 run to cut Heritage Hill's lead to 31-22. "They jumped out on us early in the third quarter and really shot the ball well," Elliott said. Patriots' stud Simon Scherry knocked down five 3-pointers on his way to scoring a game-high 25 points. Teammates Murray Bech- er added 22 and Blake Sisley had 13. "It is a pick your poison with them and we decided to play a 2- 3 zone and make them shoot con- tested 3-pointers, and try and keep the ball out of Sisley's hands," El- liott said. "We did a nice job on him, holding him to 13 points, but Scherry and Becher really shot the ball well against us." Scott led the Chargers with 15, Guth added 11, Craig scored sev- en, DeHaven and Gorby each con- tributed six, and Hanselman had three. "I was very proud of how hard our kids played and how we han- dled their pressure and athleti- cism," Elliott said. "Scott really played a very solid game. Guth did a very nice job on the defen- sive end as well." The team will host North Knox (5 -8, 1-3 Blue Chip) on Friday, Jan. 24 and travel to Washington (9 -3, 1-1 Big Eight) on Saturday, Jan. 26. The Hatchets were the first team outside of the Class 3A poll in oth- ers receiving votes. Ethan Gorby drives the baseline against Heritage Hills on Friday, Jan. 17.
