B-4 Sports Wednesday, Januar y 22, 2020 The Press-Dispatch Pike Central swimming stays busy ahead of conference meet By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central swimming and diving team will compete at the Pocket Athletic Conference meet on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 25 at Tecumseh. The Chargers stayed busy this past week while making their fi- nal preparations for the conference meet by competing in four differ- ent meets. "Our boys and girls had a very tough week swimming three meets throughout the week lead- ing into the meet," Pike Central coach Travis Cochren said. "They were tired and sore, but pushed through it and swam a great meet. We had several individuals setting personal best times yet again, and took many top finishes." Pike Central boys were bare- ly edged by Gibson Southern on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Tecumseh. The Titans scored with 105 team points, the Chargers had 103 and the Braves finished with 72. "Nobody really likes a Saturday morning meet," Cochren said. "But we are very proud of how our swimmers performed this week- end at Tecumseh. In my opinion, this was our best meet of the sea- son. The energy levels were high the entire time. When our athletes were not in the water swimming, they were at the edge of the pool cheering on each other. This is what PC swimming is about and this is what makes it fun." The Chargers 200 -yard med- ley relay team of Brayden Cooper, Isaac Burdette, Sam Theising and Coleman Henson started the meet off with a victory for Pike Central. They placed first with a time of 2:3.73. Cooper and Sam Theising also finished first and second in the 100 backstroke with times of 1:11.32 and 1:13.66, respectively. Sam Theising (2:43.47) also fin- ished second to teammate Draven Readle (2:45.57) in the 200 indi- vidual medley. Readle also claimed gold in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:26.05. "Our boys were edged out this morning by Gibson Southern by two points," Cochren said. "I have no doubt they can change this outcome next week in PAC and be ahead of Gibson Southern. We lost a couple close races that would have changed the outcome of to- day's meet, and it is just going to make our boys more hungry to beat them next week." The Titans also won the girls' competition with 131 team points. Pike Central was second with 102 and Tecumseh was third with 90. The Lady Chargers' 200 -medley relay team of Madison Riley, Em- ma McKinney, Charlotte Duden- hoeffer and Jillian Bailey earned the win with a time of 2:16.73. Ri- ley and Bailey also finished one and two in the 100 backstroke with times of 1:14.82 and 1:15.94, respectively. Defending PAC div- ing champion Jenna Meyer also claimed gold on the board. She fin- ished with a score of 197.80. The boys' and girls' teams both fell to very strong Jasper and Her- itage Hills teams on Thursday, Jan. 16. "We knew going into this meet that it would be a very hard meet for our boys and girls," Cochren said. "We swam Heritage Hills ear- lier in the season and knew they were a strong team this year. We also knew that Jasper's numbers were back up and they had sever- al very powerful boys and girls." Jasper won the boys' competi- tion with 154 team points. Heri- tage Hills had 115 and Pike Cen- tral 43. "We came into the meet with a little different mindset tonight, not worrying about team scores and outcomes, but instead on per- sonal times," Cochren said. "And just like Wednesday night, we had several more athletes chip away at their times, setting new personal bests in the pool." The Lady Wildcats also won with a team score of 154. The La- dy Patriots had 94 and the Lady Chargers had 72. "Despite the powerful swim- mers that Jasper and Heritage Hills both have, we were still able to have a few relays and individ- uals finish in high places," Co- chren said. "Most notable tonight, we were able to keep Jenna Meyer on top of the podium against three other very strong divers." Meyer claimed gold in the div- ing competition with a score of 179.75. The boys and girls each picked up a solid win against Evansville Christian and Vincennes Lincoln on Wednesday, Jan. 15. "Tonight was a great night across the board for both teams," Cochren said. "We had boys and girls consistently in top spots all night, and we had several new per- sonal best times from our athletes. These new personal best times are exactly what we are looking for at this point in the season, being one week out from PAC. With a couple more meets still ahead this week and then a few practices leading in- to PAC next week, we really expect to see everyone setting new per- sonal bests at PAC prelims Thurs- day night." Pike Central boys finished with 123 team points. They were fol- lowed by Vincennes Lincoln (88) and Evansville Christian (50). A J Hill won the 200 freestyle in 2:27.19, and Sam Theising and Readle finished first and second in the 200 individual medley, with times of 2:42.46 and 2:43.01, re- spectively. Michael Burkhart won the 100 butterfly, Cooper won the 100 backstroke and the Chargers' 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle reigned supreme. The Lady Chargers had 147 team points. Vincennes Lincoln had 110 and Evansville Christian finished with 33. The team of Bailey, McKinney, Meyer and Charlotte Dudenhoef- fer won the 200 medley relay in 2:17.52. Dudenhoeffer also won the 200 individual medley in 2:44.67. Riley won the 200 freestyle in 2:33.74 and the 100 backstroke in 1:15.67. Lily Frederick-Rice won the 100 butterfly in 1:19.45, Sarah Fenwick won the 500 freestyle in 7:36.78 and Meyer won the diving compe- tition with a score of 193.85. The Chargers' 200 freestyle relay team of McKinney, Meyer, Frederick-Rice and Dudenhoef- fer also claimed gold in 2:02.97. McKinney also won the 100 breast- stroke in 1:26.42. Pike Central's 400 freestyle relay team won their race in 4:40.77. The team consists of Frederick-Rice, Riley, McKin- ney and Dudenhoeffer. Pike Central Junior Varsity and Freshmen Basketball Roundup By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central boys' junior var- sity basketball team beat Wood Me- morial, 53-29, on Saturday, Jan. 18. Connor Young and Peyton How- ald led the team with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Other scor- ers for the Chargers were Alex Clark (9), Aden Brown (8), Gar- rett Boyd (4), Kendric Sorgius (2), Shane Morson (2) and Trent Zim- merman (1). The team lost to Heritage Hills, 52-21, on Friday, Jan. 17. Howald led the team with nine. He was followed by Traylor (6), Sorgius (4) and Clark (2). Pike Central's freshmen boys' team defeated Wood Memorial, 37-19, on Monday, Jan. 20. "We played a great game to- night," Pike Central freshmen coach Joe Chamberlain said. "Once again, everyone provided us with several positives. Feels good to finally get the monkey off our back of not having a win. Hopeful- ly that will allow us to play more re- laxed as we finish out the season. We do need to work on doing the little things better. Once we got out to a large lead, we started to get lazy on some things. We won't be able to do that against our re- maining schedule." Jeremiah Johnson had 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one deflection; Braden Howald had eight points, four assists, four re- bounds, three steals and two de- flections; Peyton Chanley had eight points, one assist and four rebounds; Shane Morson had six points, two rebounds and one de- flection; Brycen Knepp had one as- sist, two rebounds, one steal and one deflection; Isaac Ross had two points and two rebounds; Jagar Dent had three points and two re- bounds; and Fenton McCrary had four rebounds. The freshmen lost to Vincennes Lincoln, 43-37, on Thursday, Jan. 16. "We had a total team effort to- night," Chamberlain said. "We were much more active with our 2-3 zone and did a great job on the boards and moving the ball around, more open looks. They had a lot more size than us, but we didn't let that get in the way of our game plan. We struggled slightly with their pressure in the third and that ended up being the difference in the end." Johnson had 12 points, 12 re- bounds and three blocks; Chan- ley had 10 points and six rebounds; Dent had eight points, two assists and one steal; Howald had four points; Knepp had three points; Ross had two rebounds; and Mc- Crary had one rebound and one steal. "Extremely proud with the over- all effort," Chamberlain said. "Ev- eryone contributed several posi- tives. Jeremiah Johnson led that effort with a monster game. Bry- cen attacked the basket well. Bra- den did a good job of taking care of the basketball. Chanley and Jeremiah were huge on the offen- sive glass, four offensive rebounds each. Our bottom of the 2-3 did a great job forcing the ball out of the post. They had two 6 -foot-3-inch players. That effort was led by Bry- cen, Ross, Fenn, JJ, and Jagar." The team also lost to Heritage Hills, 39 -14, on Monday, Jan. 13. "Shots just didn't fall for us to- night," Chamberlain said. "If we would've shot like we did in warm- ups, we would've probably scored 50. That's just the way it goes sometimes. Defensively, our inten- sity wasn't there most of the night. End of the first and start of the sec- ond, we were great as we got with- in two, but the game is four quar- ters. They had way too many easy looks. We were really slow to our close outs, which allowed them to hit six threes. Three of those came in the third and that kind of put the game out of reach at that point. Credit to them for moving the ball well, but we have to counter that with quick feet." Chanley had five points, Dent had four points, Johnson and Ross each had two, and McCrary had one. The Pike Central girls' junior varsity team picked up a nice 33- 19 win over North Posey on Satur- day, Jan. 18. "The girls came out ready to play on this Saturday morning game at North Posey," Pike Cen- tral coach Eric Knight said. "They did a very good job of taking care of the basketball. We cut turnovers way down from past games. Stats had us down for 12 turnovers. That is really good. Very proud of the girls." Kahle Young led the team with 14, Tiffany Artega added nine, Lib- erty Taylor scored six and Hailey Parker had four. "The shots were falling for us in this game," Knight said. "That's one thing I keep telling the girls is that the shots will fall. Shoot with confidence and they will fall.Kah- le Young and Tiffany Artega were lights out on the floor. Both were hitting their shots and they both shot with confidence. It was nice to watch that happen and both of them in the same game. Our de- fense is what won this game. The girls really got after it on the de- fensive side. We ran a press and a half court trap pretty much the whole game and got a lot of easy baskets off of it. With only six girls, I was a little worried about press- ing that long, but they played with heart and hustle, and battled the whole game. Once again, I am very proud of this group of girls." The team lost to Loogootee, 28 - 19, on Tuesday, Jan. 14. "Late game turnovers really hurt us in this game," Knight said. "We played well for three quarters tonight and shot the ball a little bit better. Late in the game, when we needed the baskets, we turned the ball over. A lot of that was the girls were wore out and Loogootee was bringing in fresh legs. End of the third, we were down a point, but could not get into an offense. The girls played great defense all game. I see improvement each and every game with this group. That's what I want as a coach. I am very proud of them for that. Ball han- dling is something we will contin- ue to work on and really need to force it over the offseason." Young had eight, Parker had five, Artega had four and Taylor had two.
