The Press-Dispatch Church Wednesday, Januar y 22, 2020 C- 3 RAMBLINGS Continued from page 1 Continued in next column Continued from page 2 Pentecostal Nazarene Lutheran Wesleyan Methodist Methodist We didn't have church at Velpen on Sunday and we will be worshipping with Cup Creek next Sun- day, January 26. We will be preaching for Bro. Jeff as he is traveling to a church up north to bring their ser- vice. The reason we didn't have church is it would have been impossible to warm the old building up enough to be any kind of comfortable. The last thing we want to do is to close anoth- er of God's churches, but we need your support or it could have to happen. Please if you are read- ing this and don't have a church home help us by worshiping with us. I as- sure you our church has a whole lot of love and it can be felt when you are there. We all need God and God wants to love us so be prayerful for our church and for your relationship with Jesus and the Holy Father, God almighty. Well start this week by being a blessing to someone. Otwell United Method- ist invites you to join us this Sunday at 10 :30 a.m. as we worship our Lord Je- sus Christ; Sunday school, 9:30 a.m. "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become ma- ture, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-13, NIV ). Jeff Pinney, Pastor PETERSBURG FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 801 East Walnut Petersburg 812-354-6658 Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world Sunday worship at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday school at 10 :45 a.m. Matthew 4:12-23. John the Baptist gets ar- rested, Jesus moves to an- other city, Jesus starts his ministry with a simple mes- sage of repentance, Peter and Andrew are called to leave their fishing nets to follow Jesus, Jesus start his teaching and healing min- istry. Interesting how Mat- thew can fit all of that into 11 verses. It seems that there should be more to the sto- ry, more meat to the bones, more dialogue and descrip- tion, more details behind what would be three years of ministry that would change the whole world. Matthew jumps from the Wise Men bringing gifts to a baby to a young boy in the temple to a mature adult who knows what God is call- ing him to do and be. But Matthew takes little time to fill in the details. Why? What would the details give us if we knew the whole bi- ographical story of Jesus' childhood and upbringing? Do you think it would help us, hurt us or maybe just confuse the issues? Inter- esting questions: are there answers? Let's talk about it on Sunday. God bless. Our time on earth won't last forever. Yet we can man- age it wisely, not by watch- ing the clock, but by giving each day to God. As Moses said, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (Psalm 90 :12). Then, with God, we'll always be on time, now and forever. What's your pace in life? How could you spend more time with God, getting in step with Him? "Gracious God, when we fall out of step with You, draw us closer to abide in You"—Amen. Josh Sanders, Pastor Sherry Julian, Reporter WHITE RIVER CHAPEL UMC 3555 W. SR 56 Bowman 812-582-8896 Sunday morning worship 9 a.m.; Sunday school 10 :15 a.m. We are exploring the words in Philippians 4:4-9 and how they can help us thrive in cha- os. So many trials come into our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. But praise God, "But seek ye first the King- dom of God, and His righ- teousness; and all these things will be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33). What things will be add- ed? God's order back into our lives—a peace that passes all understanding—He is in con- trol. Facebook: White River Chapel UMC, Jeff Pinney. This pro- duces perseverance and maturity. We can also help others by their seeing how we handle life during these tough times. We must learn to ask for wisdom from God, who wants to generously share His wisdom with us. Let's "Count it All Joy! " Upcoming activities and services: • No service this evening, Wednesday, Jan. 22. I know so many peo- ple who call themselves dis- ciples of Jesus who are just like the weather we have been having. One minute they are all out in their Chris- tian walk, and then they are moaning and groaning and have become cold. I have found that reading the Word, praying and being faithful to attend Church keeps the fire stoked, and joy, peace and hope fill my life. Check your walk, perhaps it needs some changes. OAKLAND CITY FIRST PENTECOST Hwy. 64 East Sunday morning service 9:30 a.m. with children's Sunday school during the ministry of the Word; Sun- day and Wednesday eve- ning services at 6 p.m. All services are CST (Gibson Co. times). Destroy the worry habit with Psalm 8:2; 9:1-3, and Matthew 21:16. Worry is based in fear and they work together to destroy our faith. Feed your faith and starve your fear. Ron Vickers, Pastor Elaine Young, Reporter, 812-749 -1122 (leave a mes- sage). Be blessed this week and let your light shine. Pray for our great coun- try, our government and our president. Remember those in hospitals, nursing homes, your family and friends by your daily prayers. In God's Service. George Bruce Jr., Pastor Presbyterian MAIN STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10th and Main Streets, Petersburg 812-354-6844 Sunday worship 10 :30 a.m. We have a nursery for children up to the age of seven and we also have a van route in Petersburg to pick anyone up. Come vis- it us, our doors are always open to you. What can you do? Paul Smith (1921-2007) dug deep to summon in- credible gifts of creativi- ty and perseverance. Born with severe cerebral pal- sy, he started making art at age 11 on an old type- writer. Steadying one hand with the other so he could use one finger to make one deliberate keystroke at a time, he typed symbols, such as # and @, using a black or colored ribbon. In this painstaking way, he "painted" stunningly de- tailed pictures. In a T V report from 2004 (search "Typewriter Art- ist" on YouTube), a friend says Smith found joy in being creative, and saw that as his life's purpose. When someone would say, "I could never do that," the artist would answer, "What can you do? " Whatever our challeng- es, God has given us all gifts to share with the world. Perhaps you can't "paint" pictures with a typewriter...but what can you do? Do it! Office hours: 9 a.m.- noon, Monday-Friday. Mechanics Street Otwell Pastor 812-354-3028 Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; evening worship service 6:30 p.m. Nursery available. Tuesday morning women's Bible study at the fellowship hall 10 a.m. Four most powerful words When is the last time someone told you, "I'm proud of you? " Not for what you've done or accomplished but just for being you. If you are like most people, it's been far too long. These four words are some of the most encouraging words to the human ear. If you are a leader, your words are magnified. Some- thing that seems of no con- sequence to you can lift a team member's spirits or crush them. If you are a par- ent, this power is amplified even more. Eugene Peterson trans- lates a passage from the Bi- ble ( James 3) this way: A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly any- thing—or destroy it. Whether you are a compa- ny leader, a parent, a mentor, or someone that others look up to for any reason, your words hold immense pow- er. That's why it's critical that your words build oth- ers up, not tear them down. They must be encouraging. This week, think about your words—Are they build- ing someone up or tearing them down? We invite all of you to come and worship with us. Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter CHURCH NOTE DEADLINE 10 A.M. EVERY TUESDAY SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
