The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, December 25, 2019 B- 3 BOONVILLE Continued from page 1 SPLIT Continued from page 1 SWIM Continued from page 1 Boonville blasts PC JV Freshmen boys drop two By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central boys' ju- nior varsity basketball team suffered a 52-29 lopsided loss to Boonville on Tues- day, Dec. 17. The Pioneers defense frustrated the Chargers and held Pike Central to single digits in each quarter. Pike Central was led by Garrett Boyd with five points. Other Charger scor- ers were Kendric Sorgi- us (4), Hunter Traylor (4), Shane Morson (4), Peyton Howald (4), Alex Clark (3), Trent Zimmerman (3) and Ashton Evans (2). Pike Central's freshmen team suffered a nail-biting defeat to North Posey on Thursday, Dec. 19. The Vikings won 33-31. Pike Central led 13-8 af- ter the first quarter, but North Posey fought back to take a 19 -18 halftime ad- vantage. The Chargers led 26 -25 after three quarters, but couldn't hang on in the fourth. "We did really well tak- ing care of the basketball and working the ball around for good looks," freshmen coach Joe Chamberlain said. "They threw several defens- es at us, but that didn't re- ally phase us and I'm proud at how we handled the con- stant changes of pace and pressure. We were incred- ibly lazy on the boards all night and that was the decid- ing factor in the game. They made the go-ahead 3-pointer very late off a second chance opportunity." Kendrick Sorgius led Pike Central with 13 points. He was followed by Jagar Dent (7), Peyton Howald (4), Bra- den Howald (4) and Isaac Ross (3). The freshmen also lost 30 -20 to South Knox on Monday, Dec. 16. "We got down too much early," Chamberlain said. "We started playing good basketball in the third and early fourth, but let the game slip away with late unforced turnovers. Over- all, one of our better games." Sorgius had eight, Pey- ton Chanley scored six, Pey- ton Howald finished with four and Trent Zimmerman chipped in two. The junior varsity team will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 30, at the North Daviess JV Tourna- ment. The freshmen team is off until Monday, Jan 13, when the team travels to Heritage Hills. Lady Chargers JV struggles in pair of losses By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net It has been a tough week for Pike Central girls' junior varsity basketball, with the team sustaining a pair of losses. The Lady Chargers fell to North Knox, 43-21, at PCHS on Saturday, Dec. 21. "North Knox was load- ed with upperclassmen and was able to muscle us around in the post," Pike Central coach Eric Knight said. "With six freshman on the team, we are still in that learning faze. The girls con- tinue to improve each game. We will be looking to drive more, try to attack more and stop settling for the first open 3-pointer we get." Tiffany Artega had her best game of the year for the Lady Chargers with eight points. "She knocked down her open looks and also looked to drive the ball," Knight said. "This is something she needs to continue to do." Other Pike Central scor- ers were Chloe Williams (6), Liberty Taylor (5) and Khale Young (2). Keena Young returned from an injury with limit- ed minutes, but should be good to go after this Christ- mas break. "This will help us out greatly with guard play," Knight said. "Hopefully, [we will] knock down on some of the unforced and forced turnovers." Pike Central also suffered a 54-23 loss at Gibson South- ern on Thursday, Dec. 19. Taylor led the Lady Char- gers with 10. She was fol- lowed by Hailey Parker (6), Artega (3), Williams (2) and Delaney Welch (2). Pike Central will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 30, when they host Jasper. "We will hit the gym during break and try to fo- cus on Jasper next Monday," Knight said. "They will be a physical team and will bat- tle the whole game. We will work on this over break and be prepared to face it." Check the Press-Dispatch next week for full results.
