W e W ish You A M erry Christ m as hopping By James Capozella Christmas is engagement sea- son, said The Goldsmith propri- etor Dan Rainbolt, looking up from his work repairing and ser- vicing rings, jewelry, clocks and watches in his work shop. He said that with the gift of spending a lifetime together comes the gift of the jewelry that symbolizes that intention. Rainbolt, who has been a bench jeweler for 28 years now, keeps a curated collection that he said is focused on quality diamonds. Ev- ery piece is something he's cho- sen from experience. Part of the secret to working closely with customers is a lit- tle bit of Santa work-throughout the year. Customers, especial- ly women, come in and admire the jewelry, and a sales associ- ate puts what they like on a wish list. Then when a loved one asks about that person, the salesper- son has a wish list and can talk about what they like. Some customers' preferenc- es are completely from memory. "Now your wife likes that Black Hills gold, I remember," said the salesperson, taking the man to a carousel of jewelry priced be- tween $70 and $150. There are also trends accord- ing to who a person is buying for, Rainbolt said. For exam- ple, "Mommy Chic" fills in one case and normally involves birth- stones of each child. For men, the jeweler has watches and men's wedding bands. Right now, there's a trend of rose gold with champagne diamonds and, in en- gagement rings, soulmate rings, which have two diamonds to rep- resent the relationship of the two people. While the sparkle is what many clients will see, Rainbolt spends most of his time in the back, fix- ing, resetting, resizing or person- alizing jewelry. There are very few bench jewelers left, he said, and he's the only one in this area. That means he can spend most of his days working with the tiny TIG welder, a state-of-the-art ma- chine that speeds up his work in gold and other metals. Rainbolt said he is comfortable welding, buffing and repairing all types of jewelry, in addition to cleaning items with the green sonic bath. "Compared to other establish- ments, we carry a nice quali- ty diamond. A lot of places to- day are not purchasing for quali- ty. They're purchasing for price. Others sell things I wouldn't keep in my store," he said. "We back that up with service." Talk to Rainbolt about 12-month free financing. The Goldsmith is located at 205 N. Embree St. in Princeton and can be contacted at 812-386 - 7149 or like them on Facebook at TheGoldsmithJewelry.
