The 2019 Pike Central graduate was searching for ideas for his Eagle Scout Service Project, and that's when he first saw a Giving Box. "I saw where someone had made one in a town in Illinois," Hess said. "I thought it would help less fortunate people who don't have a lot of money, and that was something I wanted to do in any project I was going to choose, and I thought this was the best way to do it." A Giving Box is a hand- made community cabinet that's filled with donated items, like toiletries, house- hold items and food, where community members can take what they need and give what they can. Hess had to submit a written plan using the Boy Scouts of America's Eagle Scout Leadership Project Workbook and have it ap- proved by a Scout Leader before he could began work- ing on the project. He went around town to businesses, like the local hardware store, seeking do- nations for supplies after the project was approved. Hess said he also re- ceived some financial assis- tance from his parents' busi- ness, No. 423 Smokehouse. Then he designed all the dimensions for the actu- al box, got some wood and started making the cuts. "Little by little, we start- ed to put it together," Hess said. "I'd say it probably took a good couple of months [to complete the project]." Hess admitted he didn't know how challenging the project would be and he re- ceived a lot of help from his parents, grandparents and other scouts in constructing the two Giving Boxes. "It was my first time building anything like this," he said. "But my dad and grandpa are pretty good with furniture building. They have built everything from bunk beds to cabinets before, and I knew if I need- ed help, I could just ask them and they would know what to do." Hess' Giving Boxes are lo- cated at the courthouse and the WIC Office. "Hopefully they can re- main there for a long time," he said. "I don't have any plans for them and they can stay there as long as they want them." Ben Hess stands next to the Giving Box at the Petersburg Courthouse. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Hess built two Giving Boxes, where area residents can take what they need and give what they can.
