SR 56 • OTWELL, INDIANA • 812-354-6414 Cornwell T wins from Athens, Ohio Bringing a gospel twist to the hits of the oldies! CONCERT Sunday, June 30 at 6:30pm Fellowship after concert. 4:31) when they acknowl- edged that God was hon- oring His promise to vis- it and redeem them from Egyptian bondage (Gen. 15:13-16). This leads us to believe that it is a form of worship when we today ac- knowledge and thank God when He honors promises He has made to us, such as that found in Romans 8:28. Next, the Bible calls it "worship" when the peo- ple of Israel brought "the first fruits of the land" to God (Deut. 26:10). Thus we believe that God con- siders it worship when we put God first in our lives. We well remember the day we asked one of the men in our church to help us with some work on the building. This faithful man listed all of the things that he had to do that week, then paused, and said simply, "But the Lord comes first." We be- lieve he worshiped God that day, when he gave Him the first fruits of his time and effort. As we come to Judges 7, Gideon "worshiped" God for the assurance He gave him that his little band of 300 would defeat the Mid- ianites (7:9 -14). Similar- ly, when we thank God to- day for all the assurances we find in God's Word, we believe God is thrilled with this kind of worship. Then when we consider the patriarch Job, it takes our breath away to see how he "fell down upon the ground, and worshiped" af- ter losing all of his children and possessions ( Job 1:20). Here we see worship char- acterized as a firm resolve to maintain one's spiritual "integrity" (2:9) in the face of even the most horren- dous ordeals of life. Add to this how David is also said to have "worshiped" God in the aftermath of his heart- wrenching loss (II Sam. 12:18 -20). The worship of God at times like these is a powerful testimony to the lost that we have some- thing they do not possess. Contributing financially to the Lord's work is prob- ably not commonly thought of as worship, but the wor- ship of the wise men is said to have included pre- senting the Lord with their gifts (Mt. 2:11), suggesting that giving to the Lord's work is an example of worship that is fit for a King. We don't always feel like worshiping God when a loved one is sick, and He does not extend to us the same "mercy" He grant- ed Paul and Epaphroditus (Phil. 2:25 -27). But when the Lord refused mercy to the Syrophenician woman, she "worshiped" Him any- way (Mt. 15:21-25), and her faith and her understand- ing of why He was refus- ing to help her touched His heart (vv. 26 -28). Surely God's heart is still touched when we are able to wor- ship Him at such difficult times, understanding that when He forbears to be- stow such help, it is so that we will "rather" learn to rejoice in His all-sufficient grace, and the perfecting of His strength in our weak- ness (II Cor. 12:9). If your heart longs to worship the Lord, but you find it difficult, remember that worship always comes much easier when you find yourself in the place where God has "appointed," just as the disciples did long ago (Mt. 28:16,17). Of course, in this dispensa- tion, God has "appointed" that we suffer "afflictions" for the cause of Christ (I Thes. 3:3), but there is perhaps no time when our worship is more pleasing to God than when we worship Him in the face of such af- fliction. Lutheran Methodist gets oiled and the rest just puts up with the change except to complain to our friends. There is nothing wrong with making our voices heard as well as the minority's voices. Concerning our main street flags not being out for Flag day,I would like to say the city doesn't have much to do with these flags being put out, because the people who put them out do it on the national holidays. I have helped them put out the flags and it takes a while to get them in place. There is a sequence which they follow. These peo- ple see great joy in seeing "Old Glory" flying and that is what they get for their ef- forts. So let's enjoy our col- ors when they are in place and thank the people who take the time to do their part to respect our flag. Thanks for the letter to the editor because it is good to hear from people who care enough to share their love of country. I was the guest speak- er at Camp Arthur Gen- eral Baptist church camp this past Sunday evening. I practiced my sermon on two groups before tak- ing it to the campers. The message concerned temp- tations and how to keep them from becoming sins. I only wish that becoming a Christian would be the end of temptations but be- ing Christian does give you a friend who can help shove the devil off your back. There are so many tempta- tions in this world today, we must stay strong enough to ignore them. The campers were very attentive and re- spectful while I was speak- ing. I feel that maybe I was able to help a few of them see how the devil can be put into his place and that isn't on your back. Well talk to you next week and I hope this week is kind to you. Let us go out into this world and help make it a better place for all. JULY 8-12 ESCAP E TO In just a few weeks, we're taking a journey back to ancient Athens, where the Apostle Paul stayed! Seek entirely to depend on God for everything. Put yourself and your work in- to His hands. When think- ing of any new undertaking, ask, "Is this agreeable to the mind of God? Is it for His glo- ry? " If it is not for His glory, it is not for your good, and you must have nothing to do with it. Mind that! Having settled that a certain course is for the glory of God, begin it in His name, and continue it unto the end. Undertake it in prayer and faith, and nev- er give up! Pray, pray, pray! Let us be sure that we re- gard no iniquity in our hearts as we engage in prayer. If we do, the Lord will not hear us. Keep that before you al- ways. Then trust in God. De- pend only on God. Wait on Him. Believe on Him. Ex- pect great things from Him. Faint not if the answer tar- ries. Above all, rely only on the merits of our Savior that, according to His infinite merits, and not your own, the prayers you offer and the work that you do will be accepted—George Mueller. "The words of the reck- less pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing" (Proverbs 12:18). "Like Hannah, many of us have been left reeling in the wake of hurtful words. And some of us have likely reached to our own wounds by lashing out and hurting others with our words. But all of us can run to our lov- ing and compassionate God for strength and healing" (Psalm 27:5, 12-14). He lovingly rejoices over us—speaking words of love and grace. When have you been hurt by unkind words? What helped you to heal? Who needs to hear your grace- filled words? Lord, thank you for the healing and hope we find in you. Help us to bring our hurts to you and always to be mindful of the words we say. Give us the wisdom and pa- tience to think before speak- ing. Josh Sanders, Pastor Sherry Julian, Reporter
