By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info Birds were meant to fl y and so was Lucy Young of Stanley. Young, 65, fi rst took to the air as a student in 1976 at Purdue University and never looked back, or down, since. In fact, she's been a pilot for 43 years now and still loves every minute of it. Young, a native of Rocks- bury, Connecticut, started out as a private pilot. "I paid for lessons from my babysitting money," she said. At Purdue, she entered the Navy ROTC program and and the aviation opportunities it afforded. "In May, 1976, I was one of four women chosen to start Navy fl ight training," Young said. "I got my wings in Octo- ber, 1977." Young fl ew a variety of air- craft in the Navy. When she was stationed in Hawaii, it was the A-4 Skyhawk jet. "Women weren't allowed to fl y combat so I fl ew in a fl eet support role including towing targets, practice dogfi ghts Lucy Young of Stanley, NC was born to fl y with Hawaii Air Nation Guard pilots, and dropping practice bombs," she said. In addition to Hawaii, Young also fl ew for the Navy in Tex- as. She also took part in the Gulf War fl ying big C-9 trans- port jets. After fi ve years as a Navy pilot, Young moved to the ci- vilian side of fl ying by taking an FAA testing pilot job in At- lanta. Next, she went work as a commercial pilot for Pied- mont Airlines. Currently, she fl ies Boeing 767 airliners for American Airlines. "I fl y domestic fl ights as well as internationally to places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Lisbon," Young said. Rules say Young must retire in September from her Ameri- can Airlines job, but she plans to stay busy pursuing her oth- er passion- the history of the WWII Women's Air Service Pilot (WASP) group. BannerNews readers will recall this group was men- tioned in the March 28, 2019 paper in the story about the new Mural in downtown Cra- merton that features a WWII P-51 Mustang fi ghter plane with a WASP pilot walking away from it. Briefl y, WASP fl iers were pioneers in the history of women in aviation and Young says she drew her own ground- or sky- breaking inspiration from them. "I really admire the WASPs," said Young. "They are my her- oines. They knew no boundar- ies and set the stage for other women to become aviators. Some of the male pilots then were skeptical of their skills, but when they saw WASP pi- lots fl ying the P-51 they were convinced." Young's dedication to the WASPs has taken her to a lot of places including the March 10, 2010 Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony recognizing the WASP organization. Young also gives a thumbs up to Admiral Elmo Zumwalt for furthering the cause of women naval aviators. "He opened a lot of doors," Young said. "All we wanted was a chance." Young says that women should seriously consider a career, military or civilian, as a fl ier, but it's something that must be taken seriously. "There is a huge need for pilots, and the military offers wonderful training," she said. "But it's a long commitment." Lucy Young of Stanley, NC was one of the fi rst female pilots in the U.S. Navy. She says she was inspired by the Women's Air Service Pilots (WASP) WWII group made up of women fl iers like those in the picture she's holding.
