Facing an 11-0 deficit midway through the first period, Pike Central scored six straight points – on a basket and a free throw by junior Jayln Nel- son and a three-pointer by senior Hailey Marchino – to pull to within 11-6 with 1:37 left in the opening quarter. However, following an exchange of baskets, Lady Wildcats junior Brooke Nottingham hit a three-pointer – her third of the first period – to extend Jas- per's lead to 16 -8. "We made some bad turnovers that led to good shots and (Nottingham) hit a few early three's that put us behind the eight ball," McCutchan said. A fter a basket by Nelson cut the defi- cit to 16 -10 at the start of the second quarter, the Lady Wildcats went on an 9 -1 scoring run – with junior Rea- gan Egbert netting five points and ju- nior Claire Knies adding four more – to open up a 25 -11 lead with 4:24 left in the first half. A three-point play by junior Jenna Horrall pulled Pike Central to within 25 -14 before four straight points by Jas- per – on a basket by junior Meredith Hilgefort and one free throw each by Nottingham and senior Rachel Gress – to stretch its lead to 29 -14 with 2:06 left in the second period. Jasper extended its lead to 39 -22 ear- ly in the second half before the Lady Chargers went on a 10 -4 scoring run – on three points each by Marchino and Nelson and two each by Horrall and ju- nior Lauren Vaughn – to slash the defi- cit to 43-32 with 2:28 left in the third quarter. However, the Lady Wildcats an- swered by scoring five straight points – on a free throw by Egbert and back- to-back baskets by senior Kortney Ruhe – to extend their lead to 48 -32 with one minute remaining in the third period. A fter Vaughn scored to pull Pike Central to within 48 -34, Ruhe hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to give Jasper a 51-34 lead heading into the fi- nal quarter. The Lady Chargers would get no closer than 14 points during the fourth period. "We just could never get back close in the game," McCutchan said. "We nev- er got to where we were almost really in striking distance. But the effort was better. And they battled." "We played more confident tonight," McCutchan added. "You could tell our confidence had been a little bit down af- ter Gibson Southern put it on us pret- ty good. You could tell it carried over to North Knox. So I'm proud that we showed more confidence tonight." Nelson came off the bench to lead the Lady Chargers with 13 points – hitting five of 11 field goal attempts and three of seven tries from the free throw line – and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Nelson, who averaged 10 points per game during the Lady Chargers' first six contests of the season, had averaged only 3.5 points over the next six. "I told Jayln she played great to- night; she gave a really good effort," McCutchan said. "That's the Jayln I was expecting her to be all year. She has the ability to be a really good play- er, but she's got to be aggressive. She was aggressive tonight getting to the basket. She finished some shots around the paint, and got to the free throw line. So she did a lot of good things." Marchino added nine points while Horrall and Vaughn tossed in six points each. For the game, Pike Central made 14 of 37 field goal attempts – a 37.8 percent average – and hit 11 of 20 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 18 times. "I tell them we can't come out intim- idated, or scared, of another ball club, and we didn't," McCutchan said. "We got off to a bad start, but I think that was just us mak- ing mistakes. We weren't intimidated or anything like that. We've got to clean it up. We've got to quit turning the ball over. That's really hurt us all year long." "Tonight, we ex- ecuted some good things on both ends of the floor, but, com- pared to ( Jasper), they're a nice team, and they made more plays than we did," McCutchan added. Egbert led Jasper with a game-high 15 points while Ruhe added 13 points and Knies and Nottingham tossed in 12 points each. Knies also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists. For the game, the Lady Wildcats made 24 of 45 field goal attempts – a 53.3 percent average – and hit 11 of 22 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. In the junior varsity contest, sopho- more Jaycie Hooten scored a game-high 17 points to lead Jasper to a 59 -25 vic- tory over Pike Central. Sophomore Ka- ra Krueger and Ava Noblitt added nine points each. Krueger also grabbed six rebounds and dished out a game-high eight assists. Freshman Mallory Hunt paced the Lady Chargers with nine points while freshman Kya Leighty added six points and a game-high eight rebounds.
