Poplar Street, Petersburg Slow start leads to sixth straight loss by Lady Chargers By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School girls' basketball team is learning that it's hard to finish what you start, espe- cially whenever you don't start off very well. Turning the ball over six times in their first seven pos- sessions, the Lady Chargers fell behind 11-0 as host Jas- per cruised to a 63-41 victo- ry on Tuesday, Dec. 18. "We got off to a bad start," Pike Central head coach Kyle McCutchan, whose Lady Chargers slipped to 4-9 with their sixth straight loss. "It seems like that's been the story of the last few games." In fact, the loss marked the fifth straight game in which Pike Central fell be- hind by nine or more points during the first quarter af- ter Southridge took a 13-0 lead enroute to a 54-50 over- time win on Thursday, Dec. 6, Evansville Bosse took a 9 - 0 lead enroute to a 53-42 win on Saturday, Dec. 8, Gib- son Southern took an 18 -6 lead enroute to a 84-39 win on Thursday, Dec. 13, and North Knox took a 17-5 lead enroute to a 64-35 win on Sat- urday, Dec. 15. The Alices, trailing 28 -21 at halftime, scored 11 straight points to open the third period to take a 33-28 lead. "We just have to learn how to win," said Chargers head coach Hunter Elliott, whose team slipped to 1-5 with its third straight loss. "We came out in the third quarter and we took three straight threes – and missed all three – and they made three lay-ups (by Lane, junior Torrance Gillis and sopho- more Ethan Bushey) and kind of turned the game around." With Pike Central still clinging to a 28 -27 lead, Elliott called a 30 -second timeout with 6:08 left in the third period. "I called a timeout (and said) we've got to attack the bas- ket, we've got to work the ball inside, and we took another three," Elliott added. "It's one of those things where when you're not hitting them, that really hurts you." A fter a three-point play by Bushey gave Vincennes Lin- coln (5 -4) a 30 -28 lead with 4:25 remaining in the third pe- riod, a basket by Lane extended it to 32-28 with 3:42 left in the quarter. Bushey added a free throw to cap the 11-0 scoring run that left the Chargers facing a 33-28 deficit with 2:20 remaining in the third period. A three-pointer by senior Christian Benson – ending a stretch during which Pike Central went 0 -for-5 from the field (including 0 -for-4 from three-point range) and turned the ball over three times – pulled Pike Central back to with- in 33-31 with 1:33 left in the third quarter. The Chargers – following a pair of free throws by Vin- cennes Lincoln senior Hunter Hopwood and a basket by Pike Central sophomore Stephen Krieg – entered the fourth pe- riod trailing by two points, 35 -33. The Alices then scored the first 13 points of the final quar- ter – seven by Bushey, six by Lane – to stretch their lead to 48 -33 with 4:03 left in the contest. A fter a basket by junior Ethan Scott pulled Pike Central to within 48 -35, Vincennes Lincoln scored eight straight points to take its biggest lead of the game – 56 -35 – with 1:50 remaining. A three-point play by Benson with 1:20 left closed out the scoring. "We had the lead going into halftime, and then we got a little tight coming out there the second half," Elliott said.
