By Janice Barniak SG Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com Christmas is engagement season, said The Gold- smith proprietor Dan Rainbolt, and with the gift of spending a lifetime together comes the gift of the jewelry that symbolizes that intention. Rainbolt, who has been a bench jeweler for 27 years, keeps a curated collection that he said is fo- cused on quality diamonds. Every piece is some- thing he's chosen from experience. Part of the secret of working closely with the cus- tomers is a little bit of Santa work—throughout the year customers, especially women, come in and ad- mire the jewelry, the a sales associate puts what they like on a wish list. Then when a loved one asks about that person, the salesperson has a wish list and can talk about what they like. Some customers' preferences are completely from memory, as it was Friday when a customer came in to discuss jewelry. "Now your wife likes that Black Hills gold, I re- member," said the salesperson, taking the man to a carousel of jewelry priced between $70 and $150. There are also trends according to who a person is buying for, Rainbolt said. For example, "Mom- my Chic" fills in one case, and normally involves the birthstones of each child, for example. For men, the jeweler has watches and men's wedding bands. Right now, there's a trend of rose gold with cham- pagne diamonds, and, in engagement rings, soul mate rings, which have two diamonds to represent the relationship of the two people. While the sparkle is what many clients will see, Rainbolt spends most of his time in the back, fixing, resetting, resizing or personalizing jewelry. There are very few bench jewelers left, he said, and he's the only one in this area. That means he can spend most of his days work- ing with the tiny TIG welder, a state-of-the-art ma- chine he bought last year to speed his work, or buff- ing, or cleaning jewelry in the green sonic bath. He said that is where he's most comfortable. "Compared to other establishments, we carry a nice quality diamond. A lot of places today are not purchasing for quality. They're purchasing for price. Others sell things I wouldn't keep in my store," he said. "We back that up with service." B-6 Shopping Wednesday, December 19, 2018 The Press-Dispatch
