B-4 Sports Wednesday, December 12, 2018 The Press-Dispatch PCMS Lady Chargers fall at Heritage Hills The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team dropped a 25 -20 loss at Heritage Hills on Thursday, Dec. 6. The loss ended a four- game winning streak by the Lady Chargers, who slipped to 7-2. "Heritage Hills was scrap- py and played very hard," said Pike Central eighth grade coach Eric Knight. "This disrupted everyone and made us struggle a lit- tle getting into the offense." Heritage Hills jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first quarter, but Pike Cen- tral rallied, outscoring the Lady Patriots 7-1 in the sec- ond period to close to with- in 15 -12 at halftime. The Lady Chargers, trail- ing 19 -16 at the start of the fourth period, would take a one-point lead with a little more than a minute remain- ing before an unforced turn- over gave Heritage Hills the ball – and the lead. "We had to start the foul game to stop the clock and get them to the line," Knight said. "The first couple they missed, but so did we on the rebounding. We could not come up with those late re- bounds, and we also turned it over a couple times late in the game that really hurt the final score." "The girls worked hard and played hard," Knight added. "We just couldn't buy a bucket or come down with rebounds or 50 -50 balls." "Overall, I was upset with the loss, but I think the girls were also," Knight added. "That tells me they care and they are there to win." Kennedy Willis led Pike Central in scoring with five points while Jaylynn Cape- hart, Chloe Williams and Kahle Young added four points each. Delaney Welch rounded out the scoring for the Lady Chargers with three points. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made just one of seven free throw attempts. "The free throw line was another dagger that hurt," Knight said. "Once we get to Christmas break, we are going to take advan- tage of the time off to get in the gym and shoot. On- ly hitting one free throw in close, tight games hurts you at the end." In the seventh grade con- test, Heritage Hills defeat- ed Pike Central 22-9. Mol- ly Schnieders paced the Lady Patriots with a game- high eight points. Brailey Mills led the Lady Chargers with six points, while Wren Kabrick and Anna White- head added two points and one point, respectively. With the loss, Pike Cen- tral fell to 5 -3.
