Poplar Street, Petersburg Junior Sam Theising and sophomore Garrett Boyd won one individual event each as the Pike Central High School boys' swimming and diving team fin- ished second in a three-team meet host- ed by South Spencer on Thursday, Dec. 6. Sam Theising placed first in the 500 -yard freestyle with a time of 6:28.42, while Boyd placed first in diving with a six-dive score of 115.80 points. Placing second in individual events for the Chargers were Sam Theising in the 50 -yard freestyle with a personal re- cord time of 28.35 seconds, beating his previous PR time of 32.29 seconds; and junior Brayden Cooper in the 200 -yard freestyle with a personal record time of 2:19.15, beating his previous PR time of 2:22.32, and in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:27.21. Placing third in individual events for the Chargers were Boyd in the 100 -yard freestyle with a time of 1:11.04; junior A.J. Hill in the 500 -yard freestyle with By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Myah Montgomery scored a game- high 38 points to lead Southridge to a 54-50 overtime victory over host Pike Central in high school girls' basketball action on Thursday, Dec. 6. Montgomery, a 6 -foot freshman for- ward, made 12 out of 17 field goal at- tempts – including four of six tries from beyond the three-point line – and was 10 -for-10 at the free throw line while grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots. "She's got a lot of game," Lady Char- gers head coach Kyle McCutchan said. "She can handle the ball. She can drive. She can shoot the ball. She's a really nice player." Southridge scored the game's first 13 points – 11 by Montgomery and two by sophomore guard Monica Steckler – en route to a 15 -2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Pike Central missed its first seven shots – including four from beyond the three-point line – before sophomore Mallory Hickey scored on a put-back of a missed three-pointer by senior Bec- ca Crow with 45 seconds remaining in the opening period. A fter Lady Charger junior Lauren Vaughn hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 15 -5 with 5:28 left in the sec- ond quarter, Southridge answered with a three-point play by Montgom- ery to stretch its lead to 18 -5 lead with 4:21 remaining in the first half. Pike Central then racheted up the defensive pressure, forcing the Lady Raiders to turn the ball over seven times in their last eight possessions of the second period as the Lady Char- gers scored seven straight points – on a basket by Hickey, a three-pointer by Vaughn and a pair of free throws by Crow – to close to within 18 -12 at half- time. "We had played a very bad first quar- ter, and all you can do at that point is come back and just start competing," McCutchan said. "We changed to a half-court trap and we slowed them down. Kirby, competing at 160 pounds, had four wins by pin, one win by technical fall and one win by forfeit, while Greer, competing at 113 pounds, had one win by decision and five wins by forfeit. Sophomore Lane Miller, competing at 126 pounds, went 5 -3 with three wins by pin, one win by major deci- sion and one win by forfeit, while junior 138 -pounder Blake Henson (one win by pin, two wins by decision and one win by technical fall), freshman 145 -pound- er Jon Cannon (one win by pin, one win by decision, one win by major decision and one win by forfeit) and ju- nior 170 -pounder Ian Allen (three wins by pin and one win by forfeit) all went 4-4. Ed Cahill photo By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Leading visiting Wood Memorial 10 -8 at halftime, the Pike Central Mid- dle School eighth grade girls' basketball team out- scored the Lady Trojans 14- 0 during the third quarter enroute to a 31-18 victory on Tuesday, Dec. 4. "The girls came out real- ly slow and sluggish," said Pike Central eighth grade coach Eric Knight, whose team made just four of 28 field goal attempts – a 14.3 percent average – during the first half. "We missed multiple bunnies and lay- ups. It looked to me like their heads were not in it. That all changed in the third quarter and they started playing more like themselves." Chloe Williams, Kenne- dy Willis and Kahle Young scored four points each and Delaney Welch add- ed two points as the Lady Chargers converted four of 10 turnovers by Wood Me- morial into a total of eight points during the third pe- riod. During the third quar- ter, Pike Central made sev- en of 17 field goal attempts – a 41.1 percent average – while the Lady Trojans went 0 -for-6 from the field and 0 -for-4 from the free throw line. Wood Memorial would fall behind by as much as 31-12 during the fourth period before scoring six straight points – on a pair of baskets by Grace Freder- ick and one basket by Josie Page – to end the game. "The first half, we forced some turnovers but we did not capitalize on them," said Knight, whose team improved to 7-1. "Second half, we started knock - ing down a couple outside jumpers and also knocking in some of those easier bun- nies. This helped push the lead in the third and gave us a bigger lead to end the game with." Williams led Pike Cen- tral with 10 points – includ- ing six in the second half – and nine rebounds. "She also had a slow start to the game but came around in the second half and started going to the basket a little harder and with more confidence," Knight said of Williams, who made three of her five field goal attempts during the third and fourth quar- ters. "The guards did real- ly good protecting the ball and feeding the post in the second half." "I expressed to the girls after the game we have to play all four quarters, not just one or two of them," Knight added. "We are get- ting into the meat of our schedule now and play sev- en games in the next two 7th grade Chargers improve to 9-0 with wins over Holy Trinity, Jasper The Pike Central Middle School seventh grade boys' basketball team improved to 9 -0 with a 39 -28 win at Holy Trinity on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and a 27-16 win over visiting Jasper on Thursday, Dec. 6. Pike Central 39, Holy Trinity 28 Julian Gish scored a game-high 14 points and Quade Morton added 10 points to lead the Chargers to a 39 -38 victory at Holy Trinity. Chase Ridao tallied sev- en points in the winning ef- fort while Zane Gehlhausen, Aiden McGiffen, Zack Mill- er and Nolan Sapp tossed in two points each. Pike Central 27, Jasper 16 Morton scored a game- high 15 points while Gish added eight points to lead Pike Central to a 27-16 vic- tory over visiting Jasper. Ridao and Miller tossed in four points and two points, respectively, to round out the scoring for the Chargers. Pike Central, which host- ed Forest Park on Tuesday, Dec. 11, will host Owens- ville on Thursday, Dec. 13. The Chargers will then trav- el to Loogootee on Monday, Dec. 17.
