Christkindlmarkts be- gan in 14th century Germa- ny and continue today. Fer- dinand's Christkindlmarkt is one of the most authen- tic in the United States, re- cently voted one of the Top 100 Events in the Nation by the American Bus Associa- tion. Markt sites are locat- ed indoors throughout town. Parking is free as is the op- tional shuttle service be- tween markt sites, admis- sion, and entertainment. The six markt locations include the Ferdinand Com- munity Center, Forest Park High School , the Tri-County YMCA Antiques Markt, the Ferdinand American Legion, Ferdinand Elementary and the Monastery Event Hall. In addition to regional foods, antiques, florals, folk art, ornaments, pottery, fab- ric, bath and body, and art- work, booths will showcase the works of wood carv- ers, basket weavers, candle makers, bakers, jewelry de- signers, soap makers, and other artisans as at Christ- kindlmarkts held in Ger- many. There are many ex- citing new vendors in over 200 booths ready to show their wares. The festival- styled setting has drawn thousands of guests as part of the Olde World Christ- mas program promoted by the Ferdinand Chamber of Commerce, Ferdinand Tour- ism, and the Dubois County Visitors Center. Live, free musical enter- tainment will be offered both days at the Forest Park locations, including the amazing Marionette The- ater with half life size pup- pets at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. EST Saturday and at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. EST on Sunday. The Black Forest Organ grinder will greet guests at the Community Center both days as well. The live Glockenspiel per - formances will take place at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sun- day on the Music Café stage at the Forest Park location. One can vis- it with Santa Claus on Sat- urday at German American at 1020 Main Street in Ferdi- nand from 1 to 4 p.m. EST. St. Ferdinand Church will host Saturday evening's en- tertainment featuring a sea- sonal concert with the 60 voices of the Celebration Singers at 7 p.m. The con- cert is free and open to the public, goodwill donations will be accepted. And then on Sunday, a mass with Ger- man hymns will be held at St. Ferdinand Church at 10 a.m. EST. Free tours of Monastery Immaculate Conception will also be available on Sat- urday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. and on Sun- day from noon to 2 p.m. Vis- it www.thedome.org. All six markt sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST on Sun- day. There is no admission charge. Forest Park High School will serve as the hub locations for the free shuttle service. The Christkindl herself appears on Christkindl- markt Eve, Nov. 16, at the Markt's annual opening cer- emonies. Bells chime and children light the way prior to Christkindl's appearance to herald in the markt. This ceremony, free and open to the public, begins at 6:30 p.m. EST on the west hill- side of the Monastery Im- maculate Conception, the "Castle on the Hill" as the locals call it. A bake sale follows with delicious baked goods from the Sisters of St. Benedict, including their fa- mous German Springerles. Enjoy a German buffet din- ner with entertainment at 7 p.m. in the Sisters' Dining Hall at Monastery Immac- ulate Conception. Dinner reservations are required ($ 30). The All-Region Hon- or Band was comprised of 80 students from southwestern Indiana who were selected from more than 125 students who applied. On Sunday, Nov. 11, the stu- dents performed a world premiere of "3...2...1" composed by Brian Balmages, who wrote the piece for this concert.
