Poplar Street, Petersburg As I write these words, the cause of Christ has suffered yet another embarrassing set- back, as yet another prediction for the Rap- ture has come and gone without fulfillment. The damage that has been done is far too ex- tensive to fully document in this brief space, but you've all heard the stories. The faith of sincere believers has been shaken. Some who spent their life savings to warn the world of the end are now left to pick up the pieces of their shattered financial lives. And since the media referred to the man who made this prediction as a "Bible scholar," unbelievers now have yet another reason to scoff at Christianity, laugh at the Bible and Bible teachers, and dismiss anyone who tries to share anything from the Bible with them. In the past, those who have tried and failed to date the Lord's coming have sought to ac- count for their failure in two ways. Some have explained that the date they set was accurate, but that the Lord's coming was a "spiritual" coming. Others have scrambled to cover them- selves by admitting to a miscalculation, and setting yet another date. The Bible teacher be- hind this latest debacle has resorted to both excuses, and now warns that the end will come in October. Thankfully, we serve a God who proved He can bring good out of bad when He took the worst thing that ever happened, the crucifix- ion of Christ, and turned it into the best thing that ever happened, the salvation of our souls. And so we trust that you will join us in prayer that the disillusioned followers of this discred- ited ministry will now begin to question its leader, and that grace believers everywhere will be able to use this sad event to lead these brethren to an understanding of the truth. There is something we can learn from all this. Christians who believed that the Lord was coming on May 21 were spurred to live for Him as never before, enthusiastically tell- ing their friends and loved ones to be ready. While this failed prediction has no doubt left some questioning if the Rapture will come at all, we who "love His appearing" still believe that we should be "looking for that blessed hope" (II Tim. 4:8; Titus 2:13). With that in mind, may each of us catch the wave of this misguided enthusiasm, and may His coming find us all busily redeeming whatever time we have left in the service of the Christ that loved us, and gave Himself for us. This article is sometimes easy to write at times and at other times saying what you would like to say is difficult. Peters- burg is our home and I don't know about you but I'm proud of our community. We may not be the biggest town in Indiana but we seem to have a great spirit of ded- ication to making it one of the best. You have nothing to be ashamed of Peters- burg. I say this because when an organization such as the Petersburg Lions needs funds to help our children, Petersburg folks can be counted on for help. As you know we are always ready to help children get vi- sion help if they have problems affording what they need. This is accomplished by your generosity and Dr. Ramsey's willing- ness to work with us. Thanks is not appro- priate enough word to express our appre- ciation to you all. Friday evening our club had its annu- al cruise-in and as usual we had a great turnout from the Timeless Classics. There were at least 19 cars shown and there were awards were given for vari- ous catagories which two of them were judged by the entrants themselves. The trophies and workers shirts were made available by the sponsorships we sold to the businesses of Petersburg. We try not to ask for so much that it hurts them but it sure helps us in our endeavours to help the children. Catch the Wave Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Ricky Kurth Continued on page 2 There has been a strong emphasis on segregation in churches according to age, not color. Jesus always taught a Gospel that reached and touched all generations. Heav- en will be a beautiful place filled with peo- ple of every age. I have ministered to thousands of pas- tors and counseled with many of them. I dis- covered some have become religious con- ference junkies. They go to a big church- building conference where the speakers on- ly speak about change. They leave thinking they have found the answer of how to be a church leader. A few months later some of my friends attend another where the pas- tor and some of the speakers are multi-mil- lionaires and they leave dreaming of writ- ing a million seller book. Then they can en- joy the material side of life. They go home and change all their music to the style used at the big church-growth conference. They become so confused they no longer have sound beliefs and hardly know what denomination they belong to. We need to learn all we can but beware of the dangers and remember there is a Holy Spirit that might give us guide- lines if we don't for- get this third person of the Holy Trinity. It has become clear to me that church is not target practice. Our young adults in the church need the wisdom and spiritual maturity of the older generation. The older needs the enthusiasm of the young adults and the opportunity to mentor them. When an emerging generation ignores the values and experience of older people, they are the losers. Don't ever forget the "whosoever" of John 3:16. The older need the younger for energy and numbers and the younger need the older for their wisdom and knowl- edge. The church must gather under one roof with love and respect for different gen- erational viewpoints and diversity, but be one in Christ. Six-week Bible study at Women's Ministry Center to start September 10 The Pike County Wom- en's Ministry Center, in Campelltown will begin Sep- tember 10 at 10 a.m., a six- week Bible study on second Thessalonians. Saturday the Lions club hosted a Back to School picnic for the children who are in the Pike county CASA program. They were treated to hot dogs and snacks. Cal Biddle held their attention after their lunch with a back to school game and sto- ry. It seemed like they all had a good time at their outing. At church we used Psalms 14 as a back ground scripture. It was mentioned that people who are foolish claim there is no God. It spoke of God looking down to see if there were any righteous on the earth. Another thought was that we can be in- fluenced by those who deny God to give up our faith. Let me address these negative thoughts with positive thoughts. First if you pay at- tention to the people around you who have had miraculous happenings in their lives then you know that God is definitely on the throne and caring for us. Second if God was looking right now would he find any righteous people and ac- cording to scripture there wouldn't be any righteous but many forgiven Christians. The last negative concerning being influ- enced by deniers should be addressed by having your heart and life rooted in the love of God Almighty. So work on being the best Christ like person you can be and be a blessing to others. SUNDAY Singing begins at 2pm AUGUST 12 Carry-in dinner aer morning service. Everyone Welcome! Rev.
