B-2 Sports Wednesday, August 8, 2018 The Press-Dispatch SPORTS BRIEFS PCMS 6th grade volleyball team to begin practices Aug. 9 Practices for the Pike Central Middle School sixth grade volleyball team will begin on Thurs- day, Aug. 9, from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m., at Winslow Elementary School. Parents will pick up between the community center and the WES gym, not at the WES front door. Reminder: All students must have a physical form on file before they can practice. 7th Annual Heartland Half Marathon registration open The 7th Annual Heart- land Half Marathon is scheduled for Labor Day weekend on Saturday, Sept. 1. The event will once again include a half marathon, a 5K, and a team challenge. Cash prizes will be given to the top three male and fe- male half marathon finish- ers. First place will receive $ 500, second place $250, and third place $100. The races will begin 7:30 a.m., Eastern time, in the shadow of the Jasper Train Depot along the Pa- toka River and will finish in the shade at Dave Buehler Plaza, just a stone's throw away from the starting line. The hilly, scenic course takes runners through commercial and residen- tial areas with challeng- ing peaks midway through the route. A fter the midway point, the course largely flattens out through to the finish. The 5K starts and ends in the same location as the half marathon, but splits to take a different course very close to the start of the race. The team challenge is a relay comprised of a four-person team and fol- lows the same course as the half marathon. The first team member will travel 3.8 miles, then pass along his/her timing chip to the second member. The second member will cover 4.05 miles, the third mem- ber 2.5 miles, and the final member 2.75 miles. The registration fee for the half marathon is $ 60 if registered before Au- gust 13, when the fee will increase to $70. The regis- tration fee for the 5K is $25. The registration fee for the team challenge is $25 per person/$100 per team. Pre-registrants will re- ceive a technical shirt, and the first 500 half marathon registrants will receive a special gift. A free training group will meet every Sunday at 7 a.m. Eastern time, at Downtown Running and Fitness locat- ed at 331 Mill Street. This training group is open to the public and participants are free to run/walk at their own pace. The Heartland Half Mar- athon, 5K, and Team Chal- lenge are being coordi- nated by DC MultiSport, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting health and wellness while giving back to local com- munities. Lodging information is being coordinated by the Dubois County Visitors Center and race-day event volunteers are being coor- dinated by Memorial Hos- pital and Health Care Cen- ter, the event's corporate sponsor. The majority of the pro- ceeds from this year's race will be given to the Phillip R. Dawkins Heart & Vascu- lar Center at Memorial Hos- pital to be utilized for new integrative medicine ser- vices provided to cardiac patients. Ten percent of the pro- ceeds will go toward the DC MultiSport Endowment to ensure future stability of the organization and to con- tinue in its efforts to give to- ward worthy causes. Daves would end the in- ning by striking out Mark Teahen on three pitches. In the third inning, Daves surrendered a one-out single to Damon and – after retiring Drew on a called third strike – a two-out single by Werth before retiring Swisher to snuff out the scoring threat. LaRoche led off the fourth inning with a double, ad- vanced to third on a ground- out by Johnson and scored on a ground-out by Burke to ex- tend the Louisville Stars' lead to 2-0. Then, after walking Tea- hen, Daves threw two pitch- es outside the strike zone to Corky Miller before Miller – who spent parts of 11 sea- sons in the major leagues – smashed Daves' third offer- ing for a two-run homer to left field. "I knew as soon as I let it go that this could be bad, be- cause it was waist high, at least," Daves said. "It wasn't straight down the middle, but it was close enough. I kind of figured as soon as I let go of that one that I wanted it back." Daves subsequently left the game after having al- lowed four runs – all earned – on five hits, walked two and struck out two while facing 18 batters over 3-2/3 innings. "The strike zone was more major-league style and my control isn't what it used to be," Daves said. "So it was a little bit harder for me to hit my spots like I used to." For the game, Daves deliv- ered 82 pitches, including 47 for strikes. "I just didn't want to leave anything over the plate," Daves said. "I tried to get them to swing at things that weren't strikes but, you know, they're former professionals. They didn't go for that too much. I didn't throw as ma- ny strikes as I wanted to but I haven't had quite the practice. I'm not coming off a college season like I used to." The Louisville Stars would tack on another run in the eighth inning to cap off a 5 - 0 victory as six pitchers – Ja- son Marquis, Aaron Harang, Ryan Matthews, Brett Tom- ko, Joe Beimel and Heath Bell – combined on a five-hit shut- out. The loss was the first of the season for the Jasper Reds, who entered the Blue- grass World Series 18 -0. The Reds would drop an 11-3 de- cision to the Sterling X-Press on Wednesday, Aug. 1, be- fore closing out the 2018 cam- paign with a 4-0 victory over the Dubois County Bombers on Friday, Aug. 3. The Bombers would go on to win the Bluegrass World Series championship, defeat- ing the Louisville Stars 6 -4 on Saturday, Aug. 4. Daves, meanwhile, inter- viewed for a teaching po- sition at Wood Memorial High School on Tuesday, Ju- ly 31, and was hired. He will assume his new duties at the eastern Gibson County school – where he will likely help coach the Trojans' base- ball team – later this week. For the 2018 season, Daves ended 5 -1 with one save, striking out 42 in 35 -2/3 in- nings while allowing just six earned runs. "I figured if I'm going to lose, that's the team I want- ed to lose to," Daves said with a laugh. As far as continuing his playing career with the Jas- per Reds, Daves said that re- mained to be decided. "You know, I've been try- ing to hang it up for a while, but, every year, ( Jasper Reds manager) Bob (Alles) gives me a call and he's like, 'Hey, you going to pitch for us this year? ' And I'm like, 'Man, I don't know if I can, but I'll show up. I'll give you what I got."
