16 Milwaukee Post December 28, 2012 Areas west, north recover after first snowfall Milwaukee County receives about three inches By CHRIS FLOOD AND DWAYNE BUTLER Conley News Service MILWAUKEE Things werent quite as dicey in Milwaukee County as they were to the west and north of Waukesha, which were the hardest hit in the first snowstorm of the season. Reports showed that the Madison area was hit with up to 20 inches of snow in some areas. Jefferson County saw between 5 and 12 inches with western municipalties seeing more snow than those further east in the county and Milwaukee County received less than 3 inches. Gov. Scott Walker issued an executive order Dec. 19 declaring a state emergency to allow state and local governments to prepare the resources they need to respond to the storm, which dumped up to 19 inches of snow in a storm corridor spanning from south central to northeast Wisconsin. Winds gusts up to 45 mph created near white-out conditions and snow drifts of up to 4 feet, resulting in degraded travel conditions. Many school districts followed Walkers lead by calling off school. Addtionally, about 100 Wisconsin National Guard members stood ready in armories across the state to assist local authorities. Col. Kari Wiegand, the Wisconsin National Guard liaison officer with the state Emergency Operations Center, said 10 Wisconsin National Guard Winter Support Force Packages were selected at 10 armories across the state based on their equipment, skills and proximity to lanes of communication, as well as traffic routes in Readers Forum ... ground check and longer waiting period. Maybe that will help. Previously we asked: , What can be done to prevent another tragedy like the one that took place in Connecticut? You answered: Better gun restrictions? Connecticut has some of strictest armed guards? It didnt help Gabby Giffords or President Reagan; assault weapons and the gun culture are coined by the press to advance a liberal agenda. Feel-good new laws that will be underenforced or only enforced on the ones that obey laws. Psychic commitments, especially with nationalized health around the corner, will only make the rules more cumbersome. There is no solution for evil, but prayer no matter what faith wouldnt hurt. Noah Borkenhagen Franklin Better background checks and if they apply for assault, then it should be a longer back- Photo by Charles Auer/Conley News Service A cyclist braves the weather while riding along in Waukesha on Dec. 20. Don Tuttle Milwaukee What can be done? Dont panic, please dont panic. This tragedy must never happen again. To prevent this tragedy, everybody has to be involved. I mean everybody. First get lessons from our police department, like writing lessons and then putting them in the newspapers and a special column weekly, and to post special events at local schools. This should educate all the people and they can learn from this and learn from the professionals. Local television should be involved 100 percent. Please dont let this go to the wayside. This is our full responsibility for all people. Martin W. Linski Sr. South Milwaukee I would like to see a number of things happen to decrease the numbers of mass killings. 1. A study or review if the studies are already done to determine what is the common factor in mass killings in countries that areas hit hardest by the winter storm. Those armories also served as warming and shelter operations. A typical Winter Support Force Package consists of six soldiers and three vehicles. At the armory in Sussex, two colocated units are assigned an area of responsibility that includes the Marquette Interchange in Milwaukee to Highway 67 in Oconomowoc. Well drive down the road and basically if we see emergency vehicles stopped, a civilian car in the road, anything that is not supposed to be where it is, well pull over and investigate, help where we can, make sure everybody is safe, and then continue mission and keep bouncing. If we see cars on the side of the road, well investigate and make sure no one is in it, said Sgt. 1st Class Chad Gapinski, a fulltime staff member for the Sussex-based 108th Forward Support Company . Calls from local authorities for assistance would include responding to stranded motorists along routes designated by the state Department of Transportation, assist in closing roads, and conducting welfare checks on those affected by the winter storm. Weve done a lot of work the last couple years refining our plans and working with other agencies like the Department of Transportation, DNR and state patrol to identify how we can best support one another and provide the best support pos- sible for the citizens of Wisconsin, said Col. Mark Michie, domestic operations director for the Wisconsin National Guard. We Energies spokeman Brian Manthey said crews spent time restoring power to a total of 45,000 customers in their coverage area. Overall, he said the weather cooperating, less wind, clear roads and increased visibility made the process smoother. We Energies also released a statement reminding customers to avoid snow and ice buildup on exhaunt vents and natural gas meters, which the statement said, can cause deadly carbon monoxide levels in homes and damage natural gas meters leading to leaks. The storm affected blood donations in the area. Fay Spano, a spokeswoman for the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, said a lot of donors who had scheduled appointments had cancel them or could not make it. Because of the cancellations, Spano said the center is anticipating a shortfall of about 1,000 units that would have normally been collected over the period of a few days. The BloodCenter of Wisconsin has county locations in Greenfield and Wauwatosa. allow guns and those that do not. 2. Publication of the effects of prescribed mental health drugs on the brain. People do not get better. Over time, the drugs make one worse. The drug companies and the American Medical Association will fight this measure. We wont even hear any discussion. They know. You probably dont. You can bet the county the coroners do.They view the brains on occasion. 3. Most lack access to the civil courts to address due process issues on the basis of cost. Currently, there isnt any affordable access to the courts for even persons with middle class incomes much less low and indigent persons who believe a wrong has been committed against them. Obviously, all the killers believe they have been wronged. Have they? schools by their replacement with inculcation of temporal (ephemeral) feel-good, leftish values, such as the notion that people who kill are just lashing out in response to injustice in their lives, and similar empty words, I would suggest you take control of your childrens education by becoming influential in those government schools or vote for morals by removing your children from those government schools. Rosemarie Annonson Oak Creek Put the judgmental creator, who was kicked out of government schools by the U.S. Supreme Court in the sick 60s for providing us (eternal) morals, e.g. murder is a sin, back into the schools.
