December 28, 2012 Milwaukee Post 15 Milwaukee native takes her spot in Chorus Line By JILL BADZINSKI Special to The Post MILWAUKEE The plot of A Chorus Line is eerily similar to living the life of a stage actor, said a former Milwaukee resident who will return home with a national touring company in early January . The story is 100 percent what its like, Mary Leigh Christine said. Some people get jobs all the time, some are really good, some dont know what they are doing. Everybody has their own story, but we all come together to support one another. Christine grew up in Racine before moving to Milwaukee, where she attended Pius XI High School. From there, the 25year-old attended Viterbo University in LaCrosse, earning a bachelors degree in music and a minor in dance. She moved to New York City in 2010 to pursue a career as a stage actress and went through a slew of auditions before landing a role in the national touring company of A Chorus Line in October. Before that, she spent her days going to auditions and working as a waitress. Doing what everybody does when were pursuing our dream, she said. Christine Christines role as Tricia is brief she is on stage for the iconic opening number, I Hope I Get It, and then her character gets cut. However, Christine doesnt retire to the dressing room; instead she and the other ousted cast members sing offstage and walk through the roles for which they are understudies. Regardless of the size of the role, being part of the Tony Award-winning A Chorus Line, which is directed by Baayork Lee, an original cast member when the show opened on Broadway in 1975, is a thrill. There are some shows that are synonymous with Broadway and this is one of them, she said. Its an honor to be part of it. But its not her dream role. That would be Eponine in Les Miserables. That show has been done over and over again, but I love that role, she said. Its my vocal range and its a great role. Every part of it fits me. She would also like to appear in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee or The Addams Family . But for now, Christine is on board with A Chorus Line for its full run through March. Shes particularly excited for the two-day stop in Milwaukee on Jan. 4 and Jan. 5. It will be great to be back home, she At a glance What: A Chorus Line Where: Milwaukee Theatre, 500 W.
