8 LIVE IT UP! FRIDAY, JULY 27, 2018 SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL 1. You can be assured that it's safe... I get that question a lot about walking in Pogonip. 2. Try the Spring Trail for a great introduction to Pogonip. 3. You will reap the rewards from an early morning walk…critters are out and the air is great. 4. Try coming in from the Hwy 9 entrance at least once. 5. You can walk all the way to Highway 1! Climb the UCon Trail (.5 mi), and then walk through UCSC to Wilder State Park and down to Hwy 1. Fantastic if you really want to get out and stretch the legs. I have also walked to Felton via Pogonip. Trails lead to Henry Cowell State Park and into Felton. *from Parks Field Supervisor Meta Rhodeos POGONIP TIPS * down via Fern Trail (1.2 mi)." Brochures that include trail maps can be found at the Golf Club and Spring St. entrances. There are also colorful, comprehensive Field Guides people can pick up at the same entrances. As the cover states, the guide provides information to help visitors "discover the common inhabitants in each of the four main communities within the park: Redwood Forest, Mixed Evergreen Forest, Meadow, and Riparian." Kylie Smith, who wrote and illustrated the guide through funding from UCSC's Kenneth S. Norris Center for Natural History, includes fun facts like how to tell the difference between a crow and raven, and a useful poison oak reminder that includes that old saying "Leaves of Three, Let it Be!" Rhodeos also has various trail suggestions based on the time of year. "For the summer months, I would recommend the shaded trails – these are Spring Trail, Lime Kiln Trail and Fern Trail. All of these have great canopy coverage throughout the day," she says. "For the fall I would say, enjoy some of the big leaf Maples on Spring Trail—also the Pogonip Creek Nature Loop (1.2 miles)." The latter is one of Rhodeos' personal favorites, as is the Lime Kiln Trail.
