The summer season always overflows with outdoor offerings. Here are a few highlights from the end of July through the end of September. Santa Cruz Shakespeare started its current season on July 10. "We're celebrating five years as an independent theatre and continuing 37 years of Shakespeare in our community with this colorful and spirited season," says SCS marketing director Lane Jouvet. "Plus, we have extended our full shade seating, added more picnic tables, and are offering new concessions featuring salads and sandwiches from The Buttery and a wine bar!" The available wine includes vintages from Sones Cellars and Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard. There is also beer including a specialty pale ale brew that Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing created for SCS' 2018 season (available exclusively at the Grove and at SCMB). Theatergoers can also bring their own food, beer and wine up to 90 minutes before performances and have picnics. SCS is showcasing three main plays in 2018: Love's Labour's Lost (July 10-Sept 2) and Romeo and Juliet (July 24-Sept 1), both by Shakespeare, and Venus in Fur (Aug. 7-Sept 2) by David Ives. Plus, this year's "Fringe" show is Dorothy Parker's "Men I'm Not Married To" (three performances only, Aug. 22, 28 & 29). All shows are at The Audrey Stanley Grove at DeLaveaga Park (501 Upper Park Rd.). Seniors 62 and older receive discounts. Visit santacruzshakespeare.org for tickets and more information. On July 28, it's Family Fun Day at Simpkins Swim Center and Shoreline Middle School. Sounds like a great opportunity to take the grandkids and whole family! The free event will include activities in the pool (inflatable obstacle courses, swimming, waterslide, stand-up paddleboards and aquatic climbing wall); a pop-up playground, food trucks, and a beer/wine garden. Plus, Capitola Mall will be taking their oversized family games, craft activity table and giveaways. Santa Cruz County Parks Dept., City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation, the City of Watsonville and Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz County are co- sponsoring the event. The Church Street Fair is Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4-5, in downtown Santa Cruz—from 11 am-7 pm each day. The event has lots of musicians and dancers (Japanese drumming, Middle Eastern dancing, Brazilian music and more), art, and activities including ones for kids. Plus, there is a plethora of food, wine and beer. The Church Street Fair is a collaboration between the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and the City of Santa Cruz' Civic Auditorium. Visit cabrillomusic.org/church-street-fair for details. The Scotts Valley Art, Wine & Beer Festival is Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18-19, at Skypark. "Now in its 19th year, the festival & Cops 'N Rodders Classic Car show will showcase beautiful vintage cars to the delight of visitors young and old," says Angela Marshall, Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce's operations director. " The festival guarantees fun for the whole family to enjoy!" she adds. To kick off the festival Saturday, the Scotts Valley Police Department will escort the parade of classic cars that begins at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and cruises through the Capitola Esplanade up to Skypark. The free event features over 100 artists, plus local wineries and breweries, margaritas, and food trucks with 10 different cuisines. Hours are Saturday 10 am-6 pm and Sunday 10-5. Dogs are welcome all weekend, but Sunday is Dog Day with contests, giveaways and samples. Visit scottsvalleychamber.com/art-fest/ for more information.
