Visitors have observed birds such as owls, western bluebirds, American robins, chestnut-backed chickadees, acorn woodpeckers, and red-tail hawks. The site also provides information on amphibians and reptiles such as the "alligator lizard, western fence lizard and garter snake (commonly found in the grasslands)…and the Pacific giant salamander, California newt and the banana slug" (the latter three are in the redwood forests). During her tenure, Rhodeos has gained a lot of knowledge about Pogonip's trails. She has a few recommendations for various hikes, depending what level a person is seeking. For an easy hike, she recommends the Spring Trail from the Spring St. entrance to Hwy. 9. "This is 1.6 miles of fairly flat wide trail out and back," says Rhodeos. This also happens to be one of the most popular hikes. She suggests this for a more strenuous hike: "There is a nice loop you can put together. Start at Golf Club Drive and head up to the meadow, climb Brayshaw (.5 mi) or the Ohlone Trail (.4 mi) to Spring Trail (1.6 mi)," she says. "Take Spring Box Trail (.2 mi) up to the Lime Kilns and connect with the Lime Kiln Trail (.3 mi).
