By Ed Cahill Pike County's jobless rate rose to 3.5 percent in Janu- ary, according to prelim- inary figures released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development on Tuesday, March 13. January's 3.5 percent job- less rate was three-tenths of a percentage point high- er than the revised 3.2 per- cent unemployment rate Pike County recorded in December. The 3.5 percent jobless rate was also the lowest re- corded in Pike County dur- ing the month of January since 1999, when it was al- so 3.5 percent. According to estimates released by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce De- velopment, 6,166 of Pike County's labor force of 6,391 were employed during Jan- uary, leaving 225 persons without jobs. In January 2017, when the county's jobless rate was 4.1 percent, it was estimated that 6,142 of the county's la- bor force of 6,405 were em- ployed, leaving 263 persons without jobs. In adjoining counties: • Daviess County's job- less rate rose from a revised 2.5 percent in December to a preliminary 2.8 percent in January. In January 2016, Daviess County's jobless rate was 3.6 percent. • Dubois County's jobless rate rose from a revised 2.1 percent in December to a preliminary 2.6 percent in January. In January 2017, Dubois County's jobless rate was 3.4 percent. • Gibson County's jobless rate rose from a revised 2.5 percent in December to a preliminary 2.9 percent in January. In January 2017, Gibson County's jobless rate was 3.6 percent. • Knox County's jobless rate rose from a revised 2.9 percent in December to a preliminary 3.5 percent in January. In January 2017, Knox County's jobless rate was 4.5 percent. • Warrick County's job- less rate rose from a revised 2.7 percent in December to a preliminary 3.1 percent in January. In January 2017, Warrick County's jobless rate was 4.2 percent. Statewide, county non- seasonally adjusted unem- ployment rates increased in all 92 counties from Decem- ber to January. LaGrange and Elkhart counties recorded the state's lowest unemployment rate in January at 2.4 percent. Dubois and Hamilton coun- ties had the state's second- lowest jobless rate during January at 2.6 percent. Vermillion County record- ed the state's highest unem- ployment rate during Janu- ary at 6.2 percent, followed Crawford County at 5.4 per- cent. The Elkhart-Goshen met- ropolitan statistical area had the state's lowest job- less rate among the state's 13 MSAs in January at 2.4 percent, while the Michi- gan City-Laporte MSA had the state's highest MSA job- less rate in January at 5.1 percent. The jobless rate for the Evansville MSA was 3.2 per- cent in January, which was up four-tenths of a percent- age point from 2.8 percent in December. In January 2017, the Evansville MSA's jobless rate was 4.3 percent. According to data pro- vided by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce De- velopment, the Evansville MSA – which includes Gib- son, Posey, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties – had a total of 159,100 jobs in Jan- uary, an increase of 2,900 jobs from January 2017. From December to Jan- uary, the Evansville MSA experienced significant de- creases in the profession- al and business services (- 1,500), trade, transporta- tion and utilities (-1,200), retail trade (-800), leisure and hospitality (-400) and government (-400) sectors. Indiana's seasonally-ad- justed unemployment rate fell from a revised 3.4 per- cent in December to a pre- liminary 3.3 percent in Jan- uary, remaining lower than the national jobless rate of 4.1 percent. With the ex- ception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), Indiana's unemployment rate now has been below the U.S. rate for more than four years. The monthly unemploy- ment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force. Indiana's labor force had a net decrease of 7,294 over the previous month, which was the result of 4,105 unem- ployed residents no longer seeking employment with- in the last four weeks, and a 3,189 decrease in residents employed. Indiana's total la- bor force – which includes both Hoosiers employed and those seeking employment – stands at 3.31 million, and the state's 63.7 percent la- bor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 62.7 percent. In addition, Indiana's ini- tial unemployment insur- ance claims continue to be at historical lows. Private sector employ- ment has grown by more than 24,400 jobs over the year, and has increased by 3,000 jobs over the previ- ous month, primarily due to gains in the construction (+2,400) and the leisure and hospitality (+1,700) sectors. Gains were partially off- set by losses in the other (- 1,500) – which includes min- ing and logging, IT and oth- er services – and the profes- sional and business services (-700) sectors. Total private employment stands at 2,691,900 and is 32,100 above the November 2016 peak.
