The mailbox would like to receive one from you. Winslow's Patoka River has gone down, and the parks and fields only have pools of water. The temps have been chilly all week, with 40s during the day and 30s at night, and the wind gusts have been between 10 -20 mph early in the week. Sun- day afternoon the wet snow came in the area, but with the 40s, snow accumulated on the grassy areas, wood porches and vehicles. The roads were just wet. Anoth- er winter scene before the start of spring begins in a week. The daffo- dils in our yard, in one area, are now in bloom. The tulip tree has buds, and the trees have more buds on them. More flowers will soon come up, and soon it will be time to plant your startings outside. I cannot wait. I heard we can put our hummingbird feeders out the first of April. Last week, across the street on the hill north of us, we saw three deer. They looked at us while we were looking at them from the porch for a few minutes. Then they got scared and up that white tail went. They jumped the fence and mo- seyed, or walked slow, and went north. We saw them in the afternoon. Wednesday, Terri Ann and I left the area and traveled to Benton, Ill., where our mom, Mildred, was at the ER from a really bad rash all over her body. It was caused by an al- lergic reaction to a medicine she took. She is okay now, but they wanted to keep her over- night just to see if the antibi- otic was working. Now Mom is in Winslow for a visit and a change of scenery. She is healing day by day. At the hospital on Thursday, we saw some snow fall in the morn- ing, but it didn't last long. The snow was gone before the noon hour began. As Terri Ann and I were traveling, we saw the Wa- bash River over its banks and the Little Wabash was over- flowed into some fields on both sides of the road. Rend Lake was high at the dam, but some areas only had a little overflow. On the Indi- ana side, there are oil well pumps. Since it floods in that area, the pumps are now on platforms on stilts. Now they can continue to work. Laura has been working a lot of hours, but she got to visit with Mom for an hour, and then she had to make the long trip back to work again. Mom was really happy to see her, even if it was for a short time. Sunday at the house was like "home week" with Laura home for a few hours. Then, Daniel and Kyana came by, and in a few minutes, Ted, Terri Ann, Thomas and Chase stopped by just to vis- it with Mom. Then they all left at the same time, going in different directions. We were glad to see all of them. It's been a while. Winslow has a new Town Clerk-Treasurer by the name of Stacy Worthington, who lives in walking distance of Town Hall. Norm and I gave her a handshake and con- grats. We know she will get the hang of how things are working here in our friendly town of Winslow. I can't think of anything more to ramble about right now, but please keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and enjoy all the sights in your neck of the woods. Always smile, wave and say hi to everyone you see this week. However, I only ended up using one of them. So, to use up the second package, I went looking for a new recipe and stumbled across this one. I purchased the rest of the ingredients and will be making it this weekend. As always, it's quick and easy, and I know it will be delicious. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 shallot, minced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 lb. deli ham, chopped Freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 lb. cheese tortellini 2 c. frozen peas 3/4 c. low-sodium chicken broth 1/3 c. heavy cream 1 c. shredded swiss 1/2 c. freshly grated Parmesan DIRECTIONS 1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add shallot and garlic and cook until soft, 3 min- utes. 2. Add ham and cook until crispy, stirring occasion- ally, 5 minutes. Season with pepper. 3. Add tortellini and frozen peas and stir until coat- ed, then pour in the chicken broth. Simmer until tortellini are al dente, 6 minutes. 4. Add heavy cream, Swiss, and Parmesan and stir until creamy. Kristi Dischinger We all know that sitting for long periods of time isn't good for your body, but what does sitting in front of the television do to your brain? A recent conversation with a colleague made me curious about this phenome- non called "binge-watching." Binge-watching is de- fined as watching between two and six episodes of the same T V show in one sit- ting. A recent Netflix sur- vey found that 61 percent of about 1500 online respond- ents say they binge-watch regularly. Why do we do it? Accord- ing to Robert F. Potter, PhD., director of the Institute for Communication Research at Indiana University, we do it for a few reasons: • Production companies encourage us by offering up the next episode as soon as the previous one ends. • Writers structure dra- mas with cliffhangers at the end of every episode. • We want to keep watch- ing. Television captures our attention in more ways than one. Plots, subplots and dia- logue require us to pay close attention to scene changes. Our brain is hard-wired to monitor changes in our envi- ronment as a survival mech- anism, so it's hard for us to tear our eyes away. As long as something's moving on-
