Sports physicals for PCMS, PCHS to be conducted May 9 Annual sports physicals for any student-athletes go- ing into grades 6 through 12 for the 2018 -19 school year will be conducted on Wednesday, May 9, at Pike Central Middle School. The physicals will be con- ducted from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at a cost of $15 (cash or check made payable to PC Athletics). The sign-up loca- tion will be at Pike Central Middle School's main en- trance. Students will be required to sign in with their payment and will be seen on a first- come, first-served basis. Students participating in a PCSC home sporting event during the time physicals are being conducted will be worked in accordingly with the coach if it is possible. Physicals include mea- surement of height, weight, blood pressure, a vision screening and a physical evaluation performed by a lo- cal physician. Local health- care providers will be assist- ing again this year. An IHSA A physical form – including the history, con- sent, acknowledgment and release – must be complet- ed and signed by a parent or legal guardian and the stu- dent if the student is under the age of 18. The form will be available that evening or can be picked up in advance at the athletic department, any school nurse's office or at www.ihsaa.org. The physical form will be kept on file at school with a copy of the exam and will be provided to any parent upon request. Students obtaining a sports physical exam from their personal physician for the 2018 -19 school year must use the IHSA A form. For the IHSA A form to be valid for the 2018 -19 school year, it cannot be competed before April 1, 2018. The form must be signed by a licensed phy- sician. Other forms will not be accepted. A sports physical form must be on file in order for a student to participate in any sport during the 2018 -19 school year and also to par- ticipate in summer workouts in 2018. This will be the only time sports physicals will be con- ducted at Pike Central Mid- dle School or Pike Central High School for the 2018 -19 school year. Participation is not mandatory. It is offered to assist students and fam- ilies that otherwise would pay a higher cost for a sports physical. PCMS wrestling team sweeps duals with North Knox, Tecumseh, Wood Memorial Nine Pike Central Mid- dle School wrestlers went undefeated while sweep- ing to victory against North Knox 78 -12, Te- cumseh 84-6 and Wood Memorial 78 -12 in a four- team dual meet hosted by the Chargers on Tuesday, March 6. Eighth graders Jacob Leighty, Blaine Pitcher, Wyatt Frasure, Jon Can- non and Gunnar Ear- ley and seventh graders Tyrus Schoppenhorst, Ry- an Gladish, Cole Parks and Kale Speedy all went 3-0. "Cole and Kaden, who finished third, were both seeded lower than that, so to finish third in their weight classes was huge, especially for Kaden. He had a rough weight cut that morning, and made the weight with about five min- utes to spare. He was com- ing off the flu and a concus- sion from the week before. He really fought for that third-place finish today. The heart he showed today makes doing this all worth- while." "Jon came up a lit- tle short against a tough kid from Forest Park in the semis, but came back strong for third," McCain continued. "Jon really put in the work last offseason, going to some really good camps and weight training. He really has a desire to be the best, and is going to be a lot of fun to watch in high school." Four Chargers placed fifth – Jacob Leighty (8 - 13) won by forfeit in the fifth-place match for the 80 -pound weight class; eighth grader Blaine Pitch- er (15 -9) won by pin over North Posey's Landon Ep- ley in the fifth-place match for the 125 -pound weight class; sixth grader Ricky Culbertson (12-10) won by pin over Tell City's Hunt- er Senn in the fifth-place match for the 132-pound weight class; and seventh grader Kale Speedy (10 - 8) won by forfeit in the fifth-place match for the 175 -pound weight class. One Charger placed sixth – seventh grader Ty- ler Schoppenhorst (10 -11) lost by technical fall to For- est Park's Patrick Recker in the fifth-place match for the 102-pound weight class. One other Charger com- peted in the 85 -pound weight class – sixth grader Gage Gorden – but did not place. As a team, Pike Cen- tral scored a total of 207 points, trailing Southridge (321.5 points) and Tell City (212.5). North Posey was fourth with 151 points, fol- lowed by Heritage Hills (148), South Spencer (120), Forest Park (111), Gibson Southern (106) and Tecum- seh (70). "I am beyond pleased with how we wrestled as a team this weekend," Mc- Cain said. "A fter a tough loss to North Posey last week, I really thought we would end up a solid fourth place as a team. But these young men had other plans. We not only outscored North Posey by 56 points, we missed second place by just 5.5 points. We took 15 kids and placed 14. That is outstanding." McCain described the middle school wrestling team's abbreviated season – which began on Feb. 13 – as "a lot of fun." "The group of kids we had really worked hard, were disciplined, and were a real pleasure to coach," McCain said. "We have 10 eighth graders moving up to high school. Every one of these guys are hun- gry and want to get better. We are starting offseason next week and every one of these guys are chomping at the bit to get to work. They are going to be a real treat to coach in high school. Coach (Billy) Hewig and I are very excited about what the future holds."
