E-10 Winter Sports Preview Wednesday, November 22, 2017 The Press-Dispatch stronger and stronger." Coleman Henson, one of three returning sopho- mores, placed 13th in the 100 -yard butterfly and 15th in the 200 -yard freestyle during last season's PAC meet. "We threw him in the fly last year to try to get some points, at sectional and PAC," Mike Bohnert said. "We're hoping this year we start making strides. He's grown even taller than he was, so we're hoping that we can slowly get that work in to where we can pick up some speed and maybe use him in some sprints and dif- ferent things." "He's also a pretty good breaststroker," Mike Bohnert added. "We've got several breaststrokers right now, so we'll kind of have to see what we have. We've got a lot of spots to fill. We've got 14 boys, so we should be able to fill everything. It's just getting quality out of everything you fill with." A second returning sophomore, Brayden Coo- per, placed eighth in the 100 -yard backstroke and 14th in the 100 -yard free- style during last year's PAC meet. "He's a pretty good sprint- er, and also a good back- stroker, too," Mike Bohnert said. "He started making good strides last year and we're hoping we can con- tinue that, because we lost one of our backstrokers last year. We're hoping we can move him up there and he'll start coming down and getting that time down to where we have that second kid in there." The third returning soph- omore, Mills, placed sixth in the 100 -yard butterfly dur- ing last year's PAC meet. During the sectional meet, Mills placed sixth in the 50 -yard freestyle and sixth in the 100 -yard freestyle. "He did really well last year," Mike Bohnert said. "He's a really good sprint- er. He can fill a lot of spots for us this year. He's anoth- er one we're kind of looking at for the relays. He filled in a spot for Lukas at state last year. So we're hoping he'll be in there, ready to go." A.J. Hill is a first-year sophomore who ran cross country during the fall. "He's one of those kids that we're hoping to slow- ly, slowly build him into a freestyler and possibly the backstroke," Mike Bohnert said. "It's just going to take some work and just getting used to it." Sophomore Samuel The- ising, like Hill, is a first-year members of the team who also ran cross country this past fall. "He's doing really well," Mike Bohnert said. "He just keeps getting a little better and keeps picking up a lit- tle more. We're hoping we can find a spot. I think he'll do really well this year. He's been doing all the strokes, so we've been trying to slow- ly improve on all that." Also joining the Char- gers will be two freshmen, neither of whom swam dur- ing middle school. One, Garrett Boyd, is ex- pected to join Cassitty in the diving competition this season, after playing soccer this past fall. "We're working towards him being a diver," Mike Bohnert said. "He can swim. He's another one that we'll just see where we're at and slowly work on it, and see what we can do with him. Hopefully, he'll come out and be a good diver." "That would give us two divers," Mike Bohnert add- ed. "Our goal is to fill ev- ery spot as much as we can. Diving, you're kind of what you've got is what you've got. There is no way to just fill it in." The other freshman, Ijaa Chambers, is another first- year swimmer who ran cross country – advancing to the semi-state meet – this past fall. "He'll work really hard for you and keep pushing it," Mike Bohnert said. "We have a lot of them we're wanting to just slowly work and see where we're at at the end of the year. We've got a long ways to go." Mike Bohnert said that he is hoping that the returning Chargers – especially all six seniors – will help bring the younger and inexperienced team members along this season. "We have a lot of good work ethic," Mike Bohnert said. "The other lanes can see that they continue on and work really hard. They can see that, and realize it gets better. That's what I keep telling them – it gets easier as you go along. The more you're in shape, the easier it will get, and you'll see improvement." "When the meets start, the improvements will start coming," he added. "The good thing about swimming is you see your time every meet and you can watch it start dropping, and then that builds in practice, and if you can keep building it, it just keeps getting better. That's the goal." Mike Bohnert said that, while Pike Central was aim- ing at a seventh straight PAC title, as well as a sectional ti- tle – the Chargers have fin- ished second in each of the last two years – he would be focusing on how much their times improve through the season. "My goal is not to look so much at the scores or your place, but to look at your times, because if your time's gotten better, that's the only thing you can affect," Mike Bohnert said. "And if your times get better, generally good things happen." they're doing." Frederick-Rice heads the sophomore class after plac- ing 10th in the 100 -yard backstroke during last year's sectional meet. She also teamed up with Bailey, Conder and Foster to place sixth in the 200 -yard free- style relay. "She's another one who started in middle school and has steadily gotten better," Mike Bohnert said. "She swam backstroke for us last year at sectional. She's also a good freestyler. She's pret- ty quick. We've worked on her form and straightened it out a little bit. I'm hoping to move her down farther. We lost Foster in the fly, so we're going to have to fill that spot, too." The final returning swim- mer is Potts, who placed 20th in the 100 -yard free- style during last year's PAC Championships. "We'll put her in some distance events and some shorter stuff," Mike Bohnert said. "She'll swim some re- lays for us. She comes in and shows up and works ev- ery day for us, works hard, and puts in the yardage for it. We'll see what we can get out of her." Keepes – whose brother, Jackson, is a senior on the boys' swimming team, and whose older brothers, Kyle and Aaron, also swam – will be competing in the sport on the high school level for the first time this season. "She swam in middle school, I think, one year maybe," Mike Bohnert said. "All her brothers have swam, so she's come in and jumped right in, started put- ting in the work. She's got several strokes we can use. She's a decent backstro- ker, freestyler and she can do the butterfly already. So we'll see what we have at the end of the year." Russell also swam while in middle school, Mike Bohnert noted. "She's a really good swim- mer," he said. "It's just get- ting the work in and, through all the year, we'll see where she's at. She's got quite a bit of ability, so we're very hope- ful we can pull that out and get her going. I think she'll be a big addition." Meyer, who also placed sixth in the 50 -yard free- style and swam on the 200 -yard medley and 400 -yard freestyle relays during last year's PAC mid- dle school meet, heads the incoming freshman class. "She can swim about any- thing," Mike Bohnert said. "She's a really solid diver, so we're hoping – with her and Hallee – that they'll push each other here at practice and, hopefully, we can may- be send both of them out to regional and maybe put two at the top of the PAC." Dudenhoeffer, mean- while, placed third in the 50 -yard backstroke, sixth in the 100 -yard individu- al medley and competed in the 200 -yard medley and 400 -yard freestyle relays during last season's PAC middle school meet. Dudenhoeffer's broth- er, Jacob, is a senior on this year's boys' swim team. Her sisters, Kendall and Helen, are also former swimmers. "She's a really good swim- mer," Mike Bohnert said. "I can put her in about any- thing I want to put her in. She'll give it a try and be le- gal at everything we try her at. She really comes in and works hard. She was already asking about moving up to the fastest lane when she first came in. I said, 'Well, we'll start out at the other one and we'll work our way out.' I said, 'It won't be long and I'll move you over.'" Correll is a first-year swimmer whose broth- er, Griffin, swam as a fifth grader on the middle school team last season. "She's learning," Bohnert said. "She's doing really well. She picks up on stuff that we give her. We're working on her freestyle and her backstroke. She has a tremendous breaststroke that she's slowly getting. We're hoping, by the end of the year, we can find her a spot at sectional, too. Every now and then, you get some- body who comes in and they start picking stuff up, and it starts getting easier, as you get yardage in." Another first-year swim- mer is Stone, whose sister, Audra, is a senior on the girls' basketball team. "She's easy to coach," Bohnert said. "You can tell her stuff and she picks it up real quick. She always wants feedback on what she's do- ing wrong and what she needs to fix. We don't really know where she'll fit in yet, but she's going to fit some- where. She's got a long, lean body, so she should be a great sprinter. She's a really good backstroker, too, and we've got a backstroke spot that we may need filled." With as many as three spots to fill in each event, Mike Bohnert said that hav- ing 18 swimmers – eight seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and four fresh- men – to pick from will give the Lady Chargers the boost they need to win their first PAC title since 1994. "Numbers-wise, we're great," Mike Bohnert said. "Quality-wise, we're right there. We moved up to sec- ond place in PAC. We're giving Heritage Hills a run. We've just got to get over that hump." "They're tough, and they're always going to be tough," he added. "We got a little clos- er last year. About halfway through the meet, we were right on their heels, and they were kind of surprised about where we were at. But we've just got to continue working and pushing ourselves so, hopefully, we can get over that hump and get a little clos- er to that top end." Mike Bohnert said that he was looking forward to get- ting the season started. "It's been really fun watching the kids coming to the pool," he said. "We've gone from being fourth or fifth at PAC to second, and the last two years have been solid. It's nice to see that the kids have improved. They're doing the same workout the boys do. We're not shrinking it down. They're coming in an putting the same amount of yardage in. So that really works really well." "I understand, I know we're pushing them," Mike Bohnert added. "But that's why they're here."
