4 • Milwaukee County Post • August 18, 2017 Three unrelated early Monday shootings investigated MILWAUKEE — Three nonfatal shootings that were unrelated occurred in about two hours early Monday in the city, the Police Department said. Police said they continued to seek suspects in all three cases. A 43-year-old man was inside of a parked vehicle when an unknown suspect or sus- pects fired shots into the car at about 12:15 a.m. Monday in the 2800 block of North Seventh Street, police reported. The victim was struck and later taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said. At about the same time in the 2200 block of West Orchard Street, a 23-year-old woman was shot during circumstances that remain unclear at this time, police said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A 25-year-old man was driving in the area when shots were fired into his vehicle at about 2:20 a.m. in the 2500 block of South Ninth Street, police said. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police reported. Police continued to seek suspects in all three shootings and no arrests were made as of Tuesday afternoon, police Sgt. Timoth Gauerke said. WEEK IN REVIEW STATE AND LOCAL STORIES OF INTEREST HIV-positive man allegedly had unprotected sex with teen WAUKESHA — A Wauwatosa man is free on $10,000 cash bond after he allegedly met a Brookfield boy at his home for sex, with the man exposing the boy to potential HIV infection by not wearing protection, according to a criminal complaint in the case. Eugene Gross, 51, was charged Monday with two counts each of sexual assault of a child under 16, using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, and recklessly endan- gering safety. He was ordered to have no contact with minors, the victim or the boy's fam- ily while the case is pending. A criminal complaint said the boy's mother reported her son told her he was raped by a stranger; the boy later admitted to police he'd posed as an 18-year-old on a social media site and arranged to meet Gross for sexual contact at least twice at his Brookfield home after telling Gross his real age. During the second encounter last Friday, the boy's mother came home unexpectedly and the boy "was so frightened that he ran upstairs and claimed that he had been raped," the complaint said. It added Gross was found nearby after fleeing on foot; in his car was a drug used to treat HIV, which Gross acknowledged having. The complaint said Gross acted in a "criminally reckless manner" by having unpro- tected sex with the boy, and "did create an unreasonable and substantial risk of death in that he risked (infecting) this 15 year old boy, who he barely knew, to this virus." South 60th Street project underway MILWAUKEE — The South 60th Street construction project from West Forest Home Avenue to West Morgan Avenue is underway. During Phase 1, the southbound lanes will be constructed with two-way traffic shift- ed to the existing northbound lanes. The work will take about eight weeks to complete. To receive a nighttime parking exemption residents should call the the city's Parking Information Desk at 414-286-8350, option 5, between 8 a.m. and 1 a.m. Sunday through Friday. You will be asked to provide your license plate number, issuing state, and year, make, model and color of vehicle. Please note that vehicles displaying a requesting night parking permit permission must display a valid license plate. The night parking exemption for construction expires after 30 days. If the construc- tion project exceeds the 30-day period, you are required to call the Parking Information Desk at the above number to seek a second exemption. Even if you receive a night parking exemption, you are still required to follow street parking regulations. You can check with Parking Enforcement (414-286-8350) if the street you decide to park on is an exception to the rule. Slender Man jury sequestration could top $223,000 for two three-week trials WAUKESHA — Last week, Waukesha County Circuit Judge Michael Bohren signed two orders for sequestering juries for both Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, the defen- dants in the Slender Man trials. The county clerk of court is responsible for handling the finances of the circuit court, and such a rare event as a sequestration is not planned for in the annual budget. If the cost starts to creep above the court's budget, the clerk of court may need to reach out to the Department of Administration for excess funds that can be moved into the jury budg- et. "The DOA is on alert with this particular trial coming up, because security costs will be more than normal," Kathleen Madden, clerk of circuit court, said. The funds needed just to cover the sequestration will be used for an array of items ranging from transportation to laundry costs to a family visit if the trial goes into the weekend, with the most expensive expense being 24/7 security, Madden said. The estimate? Madden said as of now, the daily cost to sequester the jury on a week- day is about $4,800. That jumps to $6,600 on a weekend. If just one of the trials lasts the entire designated three-week period, plus weekends, it'll cost the county around $111,600. If both trials last three weeks, it could cost $223,200. 10 arrested in sheriff's crackdown on drunken driving Among the 10 drivers arrested as part of Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr.'s crackdown on drunken driving, Randy Babcock, 55, of West Allis was arrested for his fourth operating while intoxicated offense. The other nine arrested from 4 p.m. Aug. 11 to 6 a.m. Aug. 13 were first-time offenders. Motorists can expects closures as Marquette Interchange overlay work begins MILWAUKEE — Bridge deck overlay work was expected to begin this week on the Marquette Interchange, the state Department of Transportation announced. The polyester polymer overlay project is designed to help attain a 75-year life span for the Marquette Interchange bridges. Daytime and nighttime lane restrictions, along with overnight ramp closures, will occur. Several weekend closures of the Interstate 94 eastbound through lanes to I-794 eastbound will also be required, the DOT said. Most of the work is expected to be done by late fall. Suspect arrested in domestic abuse stabbing homicide MILWAUKEE — Crystal L. Leopold, 24, of Milwaukee was stabbed by a 27-year-old man she knew and died after attempts to save her life failed Aug. 11, the Milwaukee Police Department said. The domestic violence homicide occurred at about 10:20 p.m. in the 1500 block of South 25th Street, police reported of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances.
