The rarity of eclipses of any magnitude has sparked wide- spread viewing events at dis- parate venues across the Milwaukee area. The last total eclipse within the U.S. occurred in 1979. Depending upon how you splice statistics, however, there are other notable figures that can be gleaned from the upcoming event. A total eclipse crossing the entire North American conti- nent, for instance, last occurred in 1918. According to NASA, an eclipse within a specific locale happens, on average, once every 375 years. While one might expect the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee's Manfred Olson Planetarium and the Milwaukee Public Museum to hold events commemorating the event, other organizations, such as Cudahy's Kelly Senior Center, are also joining in the party. Dianna Bartelt, direct of the Kelly Senior Center, said she views the eclipse as a rare oppor- tunity to bring together people from all walks of life, of all ages, into one setting. The center is holding an event before the peak of the eclipse at 1:18 p.m. "We thought this would be a great opportunity to get every- one together," said Bartelt, who pointed out the center is wel- coming anyone, regardless of his or her age, to take in the viewing from the venue's court- yard.
