FOR THE Wedding, Anniversary or Engagement Announcement By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — The images were ominous and will likely be etched in Milwaukeeans' minds for years to come. But one year after the unrest that resulted in two days of rioting, extensive damage and a public display of deep division, renewed seeds of hope are sprouting from beneath the ashes. Business leaders and elected officials have shared several overtures this sum- mer aimed at bringing renewed vitality to a wounded part of the city that was the subject of international headlines a year ago as images of loot- ing and arsons scrolled across various forms of media. While the business com- munity has frequently been cited as an important part of Sherman Park's lifeblood, so, too, are the residential neighborhoods surrounding the area. On the heels of the one- year anniversary, Mayor Tom Barrett took the wraps off a new public-private partnership aimed at rede- veloping 80 homes within Sherman Park. Barrett said the city has struck a relationship with a local organization, Ezekiel Community Development Corp., that will bring the home revitalization efforts to fruition. Funding from the redevelopment is part of a $1 million housing reha- bilitation program. Jim Gaillard, Ezekiel's vice president, said the housing rehabilitation effort carries a multi- pronged purpose, including an infusion of economic activity into the neighbor- hood. Gaillard also owns Milwaukee-based Pyramid Electric Company and has carved out a niche the past decade by hiring and train- ing more than 60 unem- ployed, or formerly incar- cerated persons, into the building trades profession. Speaking to the home rehabilitation work under- way in Sherman Park, Gaillard said, "What we want to do is create hope in the community." A number of businesses and organizations have also expressed ongoing interest in keeping root in Sherman Park. On Aug. 11, two days shy of the one-year anniversary of the unrest, Alderman Khalif Rainey publicly praised Ascension Health for making the decision to keep Wheaton Franciscan's venerable St. Joseph Campus Hospital at its long- time perch in the neighbor- hood's southern end.
