APRIL CALENDAR By Matt Masterson Freeman Staff TOWN OF BROOKFIELD – Members of the Eble fami- ly met with the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use on March 25 to discuss any options for saving the Eble barn, which has been marked for demolition. The Eble family and their legal counsel, Janet Angus, maintained that the deed, which was drawn up when the property was donated in 1987, required the county to handle repairs and upkeep on the barn. Dale Shaver, the director of the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use, said that this was a misunderstanding in the reading of the deed. "There were two obliga- tions for the county under this donation," he said. "One is that the land will forever be maintained as a public park, and (the other) is that it be known as 'Eble Park.' That's it." Family members are split 50-50 as to whether they should seek an injunction against Waukesha County in an attempt to halt the demo- lition, said Elaine Moss, an Oconto County native and the grand-niece of Florence and Roy Eble, who originally donated the barn. The well-known barn along Bluemound Road has served as a reminder of the county's rich farming histo- ry, but it has fallen into dis- repair in recent years, and was slated by the county last November to be razed. "We were discussing ways that the barn could be repur- posed," said Moss. "They want to demolish it. They are not entertaining any ideas on how to repurpose it or save it, or even keep it there." Among the ideas proposed by the Eble family were plans for turning the barn into a farmers market or a picnic shelter. Angus expressed doubt over the possibility of an injunction, saying that unless the family is able to get the county to revisit the issue, there would not be much hope for the barn. A 2007 evaluation by Waukesha County found that cosmetic and structural repairs to the barn would have cost taxpayers some- where in the neighborhood of $85,000, Shaver said. The county has proposed to the family the idea of building a small gazebo on the grounds using materials from the barn, Shaver added. "What the county really wants to do is to continue to respect the value of the donation, respect the her- itage of Ms. Eble and memo- rialize that," Shaver said. Unless the family and county reach an agreement to preserve the barn – or if the family seeks and is granted an injunction – it is scheduled to be demolished before the end of this year.
