According to an announcement, Laacke & Joys owners Marsha and Terry Mather purchased the building at 3205 N. 124th St. to house LJ Design & Manu- facturing. The intent is to move the manufacturing operations by the end of June, which was necessitat- ed by increased growth, according to the announce- ment. "We are very pleased to have a company with such a rich history, strong name and reputation choose this location in the City of Brookfield," said Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto in a state- ment. "LJ Design & Manu- facturing moving to our 124th Street Commerce Dis- trict reinforces the momen- tum we have seen and the investments the city is plan- ning in that area." LJ Design & Manufactur- ing produces sewn products for industrial and medical applications, municipali- ties, schools, universities, construction and the mili- tary. In 2012, the company acquired the assets of Con- cept Seating and has since been manufacturing and marketing a line of inten- sive-use, 24/7, dispatch chairs. Laacke & Joys retail has been operating exclusively out of its flagship store in Brookfield at 19233 W. Blue- mound Road since Feb. 1. Brookfield Economic Development Coordinator Tim Casey said the new building will provide room for LJ Design & Manufactur- ing to grow. Previously occupying the building at 3205 N. 124th St. was VerHalen, a distributor of Pella and other windows. Casey said the city is work- ing with the business to relo- cate it within Brookfield. http://ljdesignmfg.com – Katherine Michalets, Special to The Freeman By Arthur Thomas Freeman Staff WAUKESHA – Five Waukesha County schools are among those seeking to participate in the statewide school voucher system, according to the Depart- ment of Public Instruction. The group includes Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha for grades 9 and 10, Immanuel Lutheran School in Brook- field, Saint Agnes School in Butler, Elm Grove Lutheran School in Elm Grove and Grace Lutheran School in Menomonee Falls. The Wisconsin Parental Choice Program allows stu- dents whose family income is below 185 percent of the federal poverty level and who reside outside the Mil- waukee and Racine Unified school districts (where the vouchers were first put into effect) to use a taxpayer- funded voucher to attend private or religious schools with no charge for tuition. The income limit for the 2014-15 school year is $44,177 for a family of four, with a $7,000 increase allowed for married parents with two children. Parents planning to enroll their children in the statewide program must complete the online applica- tion with the DPI by April 21. A total of 68 schools are applying to be in the Wis- consin Parental Choice Pro- gram, an increase from the 48 schools that applied for the current school year. The 25 schools that were selected last summer are included in this year's application. The schools already in the program will be allocated the same number of pupil slots as they had in the 2013- 14 school year, accounting for 500 students. An additional 500 seats will be given to the 25 schools with the most appli- cations as the program expands to 1,000 students. Those 25 schools will all receive 10 seats, with the other 250 seats divided ran- domly with preference given to siblings. Each private school will receive $7,210 for K-8 stu- dents and $7,856 for students in grades 9 through 12. Catholic Memorial, Immanuel Lutheran and Saint Agnes all applied for the program last year, but none had enough applica- tions to participate. Catholic Memorial Presi- dent the Rev. Paul Hartmann said the school plans to work with partner schools at Catholic parishes and with La Casa de Esperanza to reach potential appli- cants. He said last year the school found there was need for the voucher program both inside and outside the city of Waukesha. Hartmann said it is hard to gauge whether Catholic Memorial will receive enough applications this year. The school is at a dis- advantage compared to pri- vate K-12 systems if the DPI uses only the total number of applications to include schools, he argued, suggest- ing a system that accounts for applicants per grade might be better. The Montessori School of Waukesha applied for the program in 2013, but is not among the schools applying this year. Executive Director Bill Walsh said the school is pursuing options that would make it a charter school. He also said enrollment for next fall could be near record lev- els. The Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast awarded Earl the award for her exploration and creation of a hands-on e-waste exhib- it that met a need in the com- munity. Earl's project explored the effects of e-waste – also known as electronic waste – on developing countries, focusing on Guiyu, China, where e-waste buildup has been especially problematic. E-waste includes discarded electronics such as cell- phones and old computers. E-waste buildup has been linked to health complica- tions and pollution. "The root cause of e- waste buildup is poor public awareness, which leads to irresponsible disposal of electronic waste," Earl said. "It is important to know where approved drop-off sites for e-waste are, or the e- waste could end up around the world." Earl created a hands-on exhibit that demonstrated what's in a computer, broke down current e-waste laws and showed how a computer is recycled by hand. Earl's exhibit was displayed at the Brookfield Public Library last summer. Afterward, she passed the exhibit materials on to the Brookfield Central Environmental Club, which plans to show the exhibit again this year. "Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achieve- ment, and this young woman exemplifies leader- ship in all its forms," said CEO of Girl Scouts of Wis- consin Southeast Christy L. Brown. "She saw a need in her community and took action. Her extraordinary dedication, perseverance, and leadership, is making the world a better place."
