Q. My ancestors pur- chased this clock in 1894 and referred to it as a bedroom clock. After a house fire 50 years ago, the clock face was blackened and replaced but otherwise it works well. Any comments would be appreci- ated. – J.P., Waukesha A. Luckily, the inside labels are intact on your French boudoir clock. They identify it as purchased through Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Co., St. Louis, Mo. In 1883 the company became a powerhouse corporation with far-reaching locations including Paris. Their motto was, "The Grandest Jewelry Establishment in the World." Most all of their products were imported. The compa- ny's lettering would have been on the porcelain face, not only the case interior. The scrolled china case has sprays of hand-painted enameled flowers, a craque- lure (crackle) surface and it chimes every 30 minutes. Most china mantel clocks are 9 inches to 13 inches tall. This beauty has an elegant 18-inch height and is near- perfect condition. Including family history, value is $900. FYI: To authenticate the origin of the clockwork, it would have to be dismantled. * * * Q. Recently, I donated this 19th-century piano scarf to the "Threads of Comfort" benefit event for The Women's Center in Wauke- sha. They are collecting antique and vintage memo- rabilia and accessories asso- ciated with thread. – Lila, Brookfield A. Pianos during the Vic- torian era were widely recog- nized as the status symbol of a rising middle class and the height of sophistication. Piano covers were nonessen- tial but did protect from scratches and dust. They were used to decorate the top surface and added drama to the room. This oversized example could have covered a large concert grand or the popular square grand piano. The silk fabric glided into place with the embroidery weight keeping it stationary. While most were edged in 10- inch fringe, this example would have been marketed as the richest of all drapes. The exquisite silk fringes are 20 inches in length. This 6- foot-by-8-foot silk piano adornment is valued at $150. A tax receipt can be given; items can be donated in memory of a loved one.
